  • It’s FREE BRICKS, a brutally honest “sketch” that highlights the tale of our main character "Bricks," an emotionally exhausted and burdened individual on a quest for self-acknowledgement and purpose. As she unravels her own personal hurdles, she decides to join the rest of the population of the Black women who are disappearing due to their Ancestors rescuing them off the planet.

Poet, Performer, Author, Astrologer, Hampton University Alum & Renaissance woman Sonja Marie has blazed a trail some may say, a little before her time. Emerging onto the scene with her song, “And I Gave My Love to You” off the “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack, she began touring with her band, adding a special blend of poetry, vocal styling and contagious Funk jazz. She has collaborated with such artists as Teena Marie, Cody ChesnuTT and Organized Noise. Her passion to write became the catalyst to create two musical albums – The Black Album: Vol. 1 and Nativity Screams – featured in five poetic anthologies, complete two novels – “The Signs: An Astrological Memoir” and “Squirrel”. Her artistic scope expands onto the stage with her first Solo Show- “FREE BRICKS.”

Director R. Ernie Silva is a product of the Bushwick projects in Brooklyn New York. His creative career started at the age of 12 and his musical side came calling while sleeping on odd couches, random nights at hostels and homeless shelters, and a few nights riding freight trains around the country. “Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame” is a one man show Ernie has co-written with novelist James Gabriel.

FREE BRICKS continues the Santa Monica Playhouse Black History [every] Month project, a year-long celebration of works that highlight the rich heritage of Black arts, artists and culture.

Santa Monica Playhouse programs are supported in part by generous grants from the We Are Santa Monica Fund, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission and Playhouse PALS.

FREE BRICKS plays Saturday, June 20 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, June 21 at 3:00 pm.

  • “A magnificent trip back in time! I recommend it highly!” ESPN

This just in! A special weekend of Eddie Frierson’s internationally acclaimed MATTY: An evening with Christie Mathewson, for all ages! What better way to gear up for Little Leage World Series as the baseball season shifts into high gear for the final stretch.

“One of the Year’s Ten Best Plays! Whether you are a baseball fan or not, Eddie Frierson’s play, MATTY: An Evening With Christy Mathewson, is a superb theatrical experience. MATTY hits a home run!” National Public Radio (NPR).

Written and performed by Eddie Frierson. Directed by Kerrigan Mahan. Includes a post-show sodas-and-Cracker-Jacks reception with Mr. Frierson.

”Remarkable! This show is as memorable as an exciting World Series game and it wakes up the echoes about why we love baseball. When MATTY comes to your town don’t miss it! A great way to get hooked on baseball again!” USA TODAY

“MATTY” is the life story of Christy Mathewson, legendary hall-of-fame pitcher for the New York Giants (1900 to 1916), gentleman, philosopher and first true American hero who inspired a whole generation of fans to make baseball America's pastime. Besides his ballpark records, still among the most impressive ever posted, he was an author of books for boys, toured in vaudeville, made a motion picture, and was a war hero, a coach, a sportswriter and very likely the first major sports figure to be a product spokesperson.

“It’s 100% true that you don’t have to be a baseball fan to be completely engaged by Eddie Frierson’s performance. He leaves the audience with a real appreciation of Christy Mathewson, and the place and time in which he was an authentic hero. On the other hand, if you are a baseball fan, you will be amazed at how much you didn’t know about “Matty,” his contemporaries, and the dramatic baseball events of their time.” Bob Costas, NBC

Frierson, who researched and developed the play, is also a college-educated all-American ballplayer. A baseball scholarship brought him to UCLA to pitch for the Bruins. While there he also pursued a degree in theatre and, as he says, realizing that he would never be a hall-of-famer, bypassed a professional baseball career in order to pursue acting. Staying close to his athletic roots after graduation, he was the head baseball coach at Santa Monica High School while looking for the perfect vehicle to launch his acting career. He found that vehicle with the Christy Matthewson story, spending twelve years researching and developing it into “Matty,” which had one of its first public performances at Santa Monica Playhouse in 1989.

“Charming! Amusing! Great!” Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times

Ironically, Eddie has clearly gone farther in baseball through the stage than he ever would have on the field as it is because of his performance as “Matty” that he was ushered into Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as an “Honorary Inductee.”

  • On Saturday, June 13 at 3 pm and Sunday, June 14 at 3 p.m., the Master Chorale concert Limitless will be performed at Trinity Lutheran Church, 909 N. La Cumbre Road, Santa Barbara.

Throughout history, great composers have not simply followed tradition - they have stretched it, reshaped it, and reimagined what music could express. In this program, we encounter voices who chose expansion over limitation, writing music that reaches beyond expectation and invites us into something larger than ourselves. From the radiant energy of Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi—originally composed for the all-female musicians of Venice’s Ospedale della Pietà and now widely performed in SATB settings—to the joyful spirit of Missa Brevis in F Major by Joseph Haydn, we hear music that defies constraint and reflects a vision of faith filled with vitality, light, and possibility.

This concert also marks the final performance of Artistic Director Dr. David Lozano Torres, whose leadership with the Santa Barbara Master Chorale has been defined by storytelling, emotional depth, and a commitment to meaningful artistic expression. As a farewell, Limitless: The Sound of Becoming is both a celebration of what has been and a reflection on what continues—an offering of gratitude, a shared moment of connection, and a reminder that music, like the human spirit, is never confined. It is always becoming.
