  • “A magnificent trip back in time! I recommend it highly!” ESPN

This just in! A special weekend of Eddie Frierson’s internationally acclaimed MATTY: An evening with Christie Mathewson, for all ages! What better way to gear up for Little Leage World Series as the baseball season shifts into high gear for the final stretch.

“One of the Year’s Ten Best Plays! Whether you are a baseball fan or not, Eddie Frierson’s play, MATTY: An Evening With Christy Mathewson, is a superb theatrical experience. MATTY hits a home run!” National Public Radio (NPR).

Written and performed by Eddie Frierson. Directed by Kerrigan Mahan. Includes a post-show sodas-and-Cracker-Jacks reception with Mr. Frierson.

”Remarkable! This show is as memorable as an exciting World Series game and it wakes up the echoes about why we love baseball. When MATTY comes to your town don’t miss it! A great way to get hooked on baseball again!” USA TODAY

“MATTY” is the life story of Christy Mathewson, legendary hall-of-fame pitcher for the New York Giants (1900 to 1916), gentleman, philosopher and first true American hero who inspired a whole generation of fans to make baseball America's pastime. Besides his ballpark records, still among the most impressive ever posted, he was an author of books for boys, toured in vaudeville, made a motion picture, and was a war hero, a coach, a sportswriter and very likely the first major sports figure to be a product spokesperson.

“It’s 100% true that you don’t have to be a baseball fan to be completely engaged by Eddie Frierson’s performance. He leaves the audience with a real appreciation of Christy Mathewson, and the place and time in which he was an authentic hero. On the other hand, if you are a baseball fan, you will be amazed at how much you didn’t know about “Matty,” his contemporaries, and the dramatic baseball events of their time.” Bob Costas, NBC

Frierson, who researched and developed the play, is also a college-educated all-American ballplayer. A baseball scholarship brought him to UCLA to pitch for the Bruins. While there he also pursued a degree in theatre and, as he says, realizing that he would never be a hall-of-famer, bypassed a professional baseball career in order to pursue acting. Staying close to his athletic roots after graduation, he was the head baseball coach at Santa Monica High School while looking for the perfect vehicle to launch his acting career. He found that vehicle with the Christy Matthewson story, spending twelve years researching and developing it into “Matty,” which had one of its first public performances at Santa Monica Playhouse in 1989.

“Charming! Amusing! Great!” Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times

Ironically, Eddie has clearly gone farther in baseball through the stage than he ever would have on the field as it is because of his performance as “Matty” that he was ushered into Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as an “Honorary Inductee.”

Santa Monica Playhouse programs are supported in part by generous grants from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Ahmanson Foundation and Playhouse PALS.

“It's not what you look at, it is what you see” Pamela Adams

Join Santa Barbara Permaculture Network & Santa Barbara Beaver Brigade as we host Pamela Adams of Beaver Insights, & filmmaker Kay D. Ray, for an evening of talk & film, with the premiere of the documentary film The Freelance Beaver Detective, Tracking Urban Wildlife.

Pamela Adams is a Seattle-based urban wildlife researcher, educator, and self-appointed Freelance Beaver Detective, who is pioneering community-based beaver ecology—especially focused on urban beavers & the wildlife their watery homes support, sometimes with the use of non-invasive trail cameras she has taught many citizens & communities to use.

Encouraging citizens to participate, Pamela’s vision is to foster more “freelance beaver detectives” in every urban waterway in the west and beyond. A hopeful, science-grounded look at how cities and wildlife can thrive together. As Pamela Adams states, “When you follow beavers, you follow a whole ecosystem”.

A cosponsor of the event, the Santa Barbara Beaver Brigade is a local advocacy group that has joined the Bring Back the Beaver campaign, helping to educate the public, landowners & policymakers of the many benefits of beavers, often referred to as “ecosystem restoration heroes”. A cofounder of the annual Central Coast Beaver Festival, SB Beaver Brigade welcomes the public to attend their monthly meetings.

The Friday evening event is followed by Wildlife Trail Camera workshop with Pamela Adams on Sat, July 11, 9am-Noon. Space is limited & reservations required (must attend the Friday event to reserve a spot).

    Bio: Pamela Adams:
Pamela Adams majored in Fine Arts at San Francisco State University followed by careers in hospitality, and owned her own commercial Risk Management company until retiring to the Pacific Northwest to heal from cancer, where with the help of her time in nature she recovered. Adams began leading crews in the San Francisco Golden Gate National Recreation Area with the Youth Conservation Corps in 1979. During the Covid pandemic when living in the high desert of Bend Oregon, she began using noninvasive wildlife cameras, learning by what they revealed, that beavers were indeed not extinct, as she & many mistakenly thought was true, but are actually illusive nocturnal animals, not very visible during day. She also observed they were actively re-wilding watersheds all over Oregon and Washington. She began learning everything she could about the life history of beavers, and putting her hobbies of noninvasive cameras to work, she began pioneering community-based beaver ecology, especially focused on urban beavers, encouraging others to also become “freelance beaver detectives”. Now living in the city of Seattle, she has been tracking beavers in Longfellow Creek in West Seattle since 2022, her ongoing research informing that city of how beavers are thriving in an urban setting. She teaches & does numerous public speaking engagements, and is the subject of the documentary The Freelance Beaver Detective: Tracking Urban Wildlife, by filmmaker Kay D. Ray, that tells the story of her journey & work.

  • Micah Mission will officially celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for “the H.U.B.” (Hope, Unity, Bridges) on Saturday, July 11, 2026, marking an important milestone in expanding support, connection, and community resources for individuals and families throughout the Lompoc Valley. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 921 W. Laurel Avenue in Lompoc, with the official ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 10:00 a.m.
