  • Andrew Kinkella, Ph.D. is director of the Moorpark College Archaeological Program (MCAP), which teaches archaeology through research at local California archaeological sites. Dr. Kinkella has spent 17 field seasons in the jungles of west-central Belize, studying the Classic Maya (AD 250-900).

    At 7:00 PM on May 23rd, 2023, the Ventura County Interfaith Community will host a forum featuring a discussion of ancient Mayan religion by Dr. Kinkella at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1201 Paseo Camarillo in Camarillo.

    The forum is free, and all are welcome, so feel free to invite folks whom you know might be interested in this informative event.

  • The Southeast Ventura County YMCA’s 5th Annual Gala is Saturday, November 4 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The evening features gourmet cuisine, a live band and a silent auction.

    Proceeds from the evening benefit Southeast Ventura County YMCA programs including Find My Genius, a free five-week summer program for low- and moderate-income students who are not reading at grade level, Safety Around Water, which teaches children water safety and basic swimming skills at no cost, Youth & Government for teens and YMCA scholarship programs.

    The YMCA is a nonprofit organization serving the Conejo Valley, Simi Valley, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Agoura Hills and Moorpark. It is dedicated to building positive relationships, impacting lives and strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living programs and social responsibility.

  • Moorpark College, Oxnard College, Ventura College and Ventura College East Campus are holding free Cash 4 College workshops to help students apply for funds to help with college costs. Funds can be used for tuition, books, housing, transportation, childcare, computers and more.

    In-person workshops are scheduled for February and March. The workshops are free and open to the community; anyone may attend a workshop at any location and can drop in at any time during the events.

    Bilingual financial aid staff will assist students in completing applications for the 2024-2025 school-year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Students can also access information about basic needs support (food, clothing and housing assistance), tutoring, academic counseling, mental health services and other student services.
    AB 469 requires school districts to confirm seniors have completed the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application before graduating in 2024. Cash for College events can help students get ahead.
