Since 2007, UCSB Reads has fostered a shared sense of belonging by bringing the UCSB campus and Santa Barbara communities together to read a common book that explores compelling issues of our time. Conceived by then Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas, the program is led by the UCSB Library in collaboration with campus and community partners. Each year, a committee of UCSB faculty, students, staff, and community members selects a thought-provoking, interdisciplinary book written by a living author that encourages a wide range of readers to engage with a contemporary social, political, cultural or scientific issue such as climate change, racial justice, technology, memory, identity, and democracy.

The program kicks off in winter with a book giveaway for UCSB students led by the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, and University Librarian, and culminates with a free public talk by the book’s author(s) at Campbell Hall in the spring. Throughout the winter and spring quarters, the Library sponsors a variety of free learning, experiential, and social events to explore the book’s themes. The selected book is also incorporated into the university curriculum for winter and spring, allowing students to explore its themes in an academic context. UCSB Reads is generously supported by many individuals, university departments, and organizations.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Santa Barbara/Ventura County Chapter (AFP) is celebrating National Philanthropy Day on November 12, when it will pay tribute to individuals, organizations, and businesses who give their time and resources for the enrichment and benefit of our local communities. Held nationally across the country since 1987, the local National Philanthropy Day will be celebrated with a reception and dinner at the Rincon Beach Club (3811 Santa Claus Lane) in Carpinteria from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Awards will be given to the Philanthropist of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Youth in Philanthropy and other community-minded individuals and institutions. Voices Rock Adult Choir Comes to Westlake Village

Love to sing? Voices Rock California is launching a new no-audition adult rock and pop choir at Aspire Dance Studio in Westlake Village.

Led by vocalist and music educator Savannah Koenig, Voices Rock welcomes experienced singers as well as people who haven’t sung in years or aren’t sure they consider themselves singers. No auditions and no need to read music. Just come sing, meet people and have fun.

The California Central Coast Chapter of The Wildlife Society Annual Wildlife Symposium is intended to bring together local professionals and students from the Central Coast together to share ideas, professional knowledge, and information on projects, and on-going research. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided by Trumpet Vine Catering.

Conejo Free Clinic and Diversity Collective are hosting a Mobile Mammography Screening Day on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Diversity Collective Community Center, 2471 Portola Road in Ventura.

Appointments are required. Many insurance plans are accepted. Uninsured women may qualify for a free mammogram through Every Woman Counts, and Conejo Free Clinic will cover a limited number of screenings for those who do not qualify.

Early detection saves lives. We encourage eligible women in Ventura County to schedule a screening and share this opportunity with friends, family, and neighbors.

Voices Rock Youth Choir Comes to Westlake Village

Voices Rock California is launching a new Youth Rock Choir for students in grades 2–8 at Aspire Dance Studio in Westlake Village.
Led by vocalist and music educator Savannah Koenig, the choir gives young singers a fun, supportive place to sing rock and pop music, build confidence, make friends and experience the joy of singing together.
No auditions and no prior choir experience required.
