Jana Petersen is now helming the county, which has a $1.66 billion dollar budget and more than 4400 employees.

Mona Miyasato helped the county deal with everything from the Thomas Fire and Montecito debris flow to the impacts of federal and state budget cuts.

Most of those impacted are health and social services workers.

Eliminating some unfilled positions could alleviate the crisis, but around 100 layoffs may still be necessary.

Expected state and federal funding cuts could leave the county in a tight financial position for the next few years.
