  • The 45th festival of Nordic cultures, the largest such event in Southern California, features music, dancing, cooking and craft demonstrations, specialty Nordic craft vendors, and activities for people of all ages. Festivalgoers can frolic with lovable Norwegian elkhounds, decorate head wreaths with flowers and ribbon and visit an authentic Viking village and a Saami sliddastallan, or community gathering. Younger Vikings also can enjoy Hans Christian Andersen puppet shows and make free Scandinavian craft souvenirs. Food is always a highlight of festival. Taste delicious lefse, Viking dogs, Scandinavian pastries and aebleskivers. Scandia and Swedish dance groups, musical guests and headliner ABBAFAB, a tribute to the Swedish pop group ABBA, will perform on the main stage. Admission is $15 for adults and free for children age 12 and younger. Service dogs are the only pets allowed. The festival is produced by the Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation.   • FREE EVENT! Pre-event music with Juan Mendoza and bar will start at 2 pm. Event formally starts at 3 pm. Mariposas del Campo, an award-winning film by Bill Yahraus and Robin Rosenthal, shares the stories of indigenous Mixtec, Zapotec, and Purépecha teenagers from Mexico striving to change their families’ destinies in the strawberry fields of Oxnard, California. The documentary captures their journeys—with help from the characters’ own intimate videos—as they navigate cultural identity, parental expectations, economic challenges, and the justice needs of their migrant farmworker community. For young people whose lives have always been steeped in uncertainty, it takes a leap of faith to chase a dream.   • In honor of Earth Day, seven poets from Ventura and Santa Barbara County will read original poetry that celebrates nature and humanity’s connection to the environment on Sunday, April 23 at the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO). Echoes of the Earth: Poetry in Honor of Earth Day complements the Museum’s current exhibition, Landscape Through the Eyes of Abstraction, a mixed-media group exhibit that explores the concept of landscapes and humanity’s fraught relationship with the natural world. Participating presenters include, Ann Buxie,poet laureate of Malibu; Anita McLaughlin of Santa Paula; Chris Spangenberg; Enid Osborn, laureate emeritus of Santa Barbara and author of When the Big Wind Comes; Friday Gretchen, author of Unkindnesses; Jennifer Kelley; and Peg Quinn, author of Mother Lode.   • POEM OF THE BODY: DAVID LIMRITE & LENA RUSHING Apr 1–May 29, 2022 This Nybak Gallery exhibition will feature two SLO County painters: David Limrite and Lena Rushing. David Limrite works primarily in graphite, charcoal, acrylic, and collage to create mysterious, dramatic, energetic, dark, and edgy mixed media figurative work. Lena Rushing’s work typically features a strong, unconventional female presence and relies heavily on symbolism. Join us for an artist reception on Friday, April 1st from 5-8.
