  • Explore the farthest reaches of your creativity with the new Adventures in Abstraction course at the Santa Paula Art Museum's Cole Creativity Center! Forget what you think you know, abandon those inhibitions, and join us for an instructive and inventive adventure in abstract art. Each class will include a short discussion of various abstract masterpieces led by SPAM Curator of Creativity Meg Phelps, followed by media-rich, hands-on art projects led by teaching artist Jem Morris. Learn tips, tricks, strategies, and ideas to foster your inner abstract artist! Please note that this is a four-part course that will be taught on four consecutive Saturdays in May: Saturday, May 7; Saturday, May 14; Saturday, May 21; and Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. This course is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. All skill levels are welcome and all materials will be provided. The cost of the four-part class series is $145.00 per person. About Our Teaching Artists: An LA native, Jem Morris completed her BFA at Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2019. She has explored many styles including surrealism, abstraction, landscape, figurative painting, and pet portraits in the traditional mediums of oil, acrylic, watercolor, graphite, and charcoal. One of SPAM’s most popular teachers, Jem recently won a prize for her entry in The 13th Annual Art About Agriculture exhibition. Meg Phelps is Curator of Creativity at the Santa Paula Art Museum, and has taught art history and art appreciation at Ventura College for over 20 years.
  • The Oxnard High School Class of 1970’s 50th Reunion will be a 50+2 celebration this year. A taco lunch, music, and a reunion T-shirt are included in the $30 cost. Alumni will be coming from around the world, including two foreign exchange students from Sweden and the Netherlands. The weekend will also include a Saturday morning tour of the Oxnard High School campus and a casual afternoon gathering. RSVP and payment must be received by April 9.   • On Thursday, April 28, 2022, join Ventura artist John Robertson inside the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Cole Creativity Center, and watch as the self-taught artist paints one of his famous, large-scale landscape paintings! The demonstration will begin at 2:00 p.m., and admission to the event is FREE for everyone. Reservations are not required.

    The demonstration will give you a closer look and deeper understanding of the works featured in Robertson's exhibit, "A Narrative," on view now through July 10, 2022, at the Santa Paula Art Museum. John Robertson is best known for his sports art, but has worked on a variety of commercial projects, including movies and television. After coming across some of his large-scale paintings, FOX Sports network hired John to create work for a national television campaign advertising the NBA. The network hired him again to create work for an MLB All-Star Game. The high-visibility of those two projects resulted in Robertson being sought out by private and commercial clients for sports and other art projects. John has created art for arenas and stadiums belong to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and New Jersey Nets; the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and San Francisco 49ers; the MLB’s Atlanta Braves; and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
  • The derby is the annual fundraiser for the Neal Taylor Nature Center at Cachuma Lake, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. There is good news for all types of anglers! This year’s Fishing Derby will again include prize categories for multiple types of fish such as crappie, bass, catfish, trout, and carp.
