  • The Museum of Ventura County is thrilled to present the next Ivor Davis: Up Close and Personal with famous photographer Harry Benson. In this popular series, author, journalist, and investigative reporter Ivor Davis speaks with a rotating guest list of extraordinary individuals. Harry Benson has been featured in LIFE, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Time Magazine, and many more. He’s had 40 solo exhibits, including at The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. He’s photographed every US President from President Eisenhower to President Biden. He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; was next to Senator Robert Kennedy when he was assassinated; and photographed the Berlin Wall going up and down. Harry Benson has photographed Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, Muhammed Ali, Jacqueline Kennedy, The Shah of Iran, Amy Winehouse, Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, Francis Bacon, Jack Nicholson, Truman Capote, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra, Kate Moss, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. Author of 18 books of photography, Benson’s 18th book,”Paul McCartney, published by TASCHEN in 2021, will be reprinted in the spring of 2022. Proof of vaccination will be required on arrival for in-person attendees. Masks will be required for this event. If you need a mask, we’re happy to provide one for you.   • For the seventh year in a row, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden offers free admission days to seniors aged 60 and older. For Senior Days, the Garden also offers seasonal programming such as docent tours, native plant talks, live acoustic music, and more. Senior Days are held on six Wednesdays beginning on February 23 and continuing April 20, June 15, August 17, October 19, and December 14. Garden hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. One of the highlights of 2022 is the opening of the Garden’s newest project, the Backcountry, in June. Encompassing over 4-acres west of Mission Creek, it features inviting and distinct areas designed to inspire unstructured, self-directed nature experiences. The space is designed for all ages to enjoy and includes new hiking trails, overlooks, and seating areas. Last year, nearly 1,000 seniors participated in Senior Days, which are made possible by Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels, the sponsor since 2015.

Forget what you think you know, abandon those inhibitions, and join us for an instructive and inventive adventure in abstract art. Each class will include a short discussion of various abstract masterpieces led by SPAM Curator of Creativity Meg Phelps, followed by media-rich, hands-on art projects led by teaching artist Jem Morris. Learn tips, tricks, strategies, and ideas to foster your inner abstract artist! Please note that this is a four-part course that will be taught on four consecutive Saturdays in May: Saturday, May 7; Saturday, May 14; Saturday, May 21; and Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. This course is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. All skill levels are welcome and all materials will be provided. The cost of the four-part class series is $145.00 per person. About Our Teaching Artists: An LA native, Jem Morris completed her BFA at Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2019. One of SPAM’s most popular teachers, Jem recently won a prize for her entry in The 13th Annual Art About Agriculture exhibition. Meg Phelps is Curator of Creativity at the Santa Paula Art Museum, and has taught art history and art appreciation at Ventura College for over 20 years.
