  • Southeast Ventura County YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active during the summer. The YMCA’s Healthy Kids’ Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will feature crafts, face painting, inflatables, a poster contest, games, enrichment classes and a fun slime-the-Y-teacher activity. Healthy Kids’ Day will be held at the Yarrow Family YMCA in Westlake Village on Saturday, April 30 and at the Simi Valley Family YMCA on Saturday, May 7. Healthy Kids Day, is celebrated at over 1,200 Ys across the country by more than one million participants. This is the first in-person Healthy Kids Day since 2019. As spring turns to summer, its goal is to get more kids moving and learning and create healthy habits that will continue all summer long. “Kids are constantly learning and developing, not just while they're in school. Healthy Kids’ Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in mind, body and spirit throughout the summer,” says Ronnie Stone, YMCA President and CEO. “The Y believes that when a child is healthy, happy, and supported, they can make great things happen.” Healthy Kids Day takes place at the Yarrow Family YMCA (31105 East Thousand Oaks Blvd., Westlake Village, 818-707-9622) and the Simi Valley Family YMCA (3200 Cochran St., Simi Valley, 805-583-5338).   • Please join the NPHS Panther Band for a night of music! The students will be holding their Finale Concert in the Newbury Park High School Performing Arts Center at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door. The performance will include selections from both Jazz Bands and the NPHS Wind Ensemble. This year, students will be joined on the stage by the prolific professional trumpet player, Wayne Bergeron! Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles, but worldwide.

In 2022, the chapter will honor a unique team of six resilient and courageous communicators during the annual, inspirational event that brings together prominent leaders in our community in a celebration of empowered women communicators.
    This year’s noteworthy honorees, all representing the County of Santa Barbara, epitomize this year’s theme—Navigating Uncharted Waters—as they’ve shared information and helped steer community response through months of unprecedented crises.   • Old Boney Mountain Hot Summer Night Festival is back and will take place Thursday, July 14 at The Gardens at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks. Consisting of unlimited craft beer, wine, spirits, hot sauce and food tastings, this year's theme is "Bringing People Together." Over 100 small-batch hot sauce companies from around the world are participating in a pre-judged event. Festival-goers can sample sauces while enjoying live music and local cuisine. Festival attendees can also donate to cast their vote for the “People’s Choice Award” for their favorite culinary experience, favorite hot sauce label and participate in a silent auction. Singer/songwriter Wais is performing live. The festival's main beneficiaries are the Ventura County Fire Department Widows, Orphans & Assistance Fund and the Old Boney Mountain Foundation For Kids.

    Festival hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. VIP entry begins at 5:00 p.m. and tastings end at 8:30 p.m. An awards ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets start at $60. Space is limited.   • Local music professionals, organized by flutist Caitlin Boruch, have joined together to channel their talent and passion for performing into Music for Ukraine: Benefit Concert Series for Humanitarian Aid, a fundraising concert series where 100% of donations benefit UNICEF's coordinated response to the crisis in Ukraine. These concerts will feature a diverse selection of classical music, spanning works by the Great Masters to Ukrainian folk songs, which will inspire you while providing a direct means to support those in such desperate circumstances.   • The four candidates running for Ventura County Sheriff and District Attorney will participate in “Justice in Ventura County: A Candidate Forum,” exploring the social- and racial-justice concerns they’d face in office. The forum is sponsored by a coalition of community-based organizations, and will be held on Wednesday, May 4, from 6-8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Pacifica High School in Oxnard. The forum is free and open to the public. Proof of vaccination required and masks are strongly recommended.
