  • Every year the Santa Barbara chapter of the Association for Women in Communications honors exceptional women who use their talents as communicators to improve our community. In 2022, the chapter will honor a unique team of six resilient and courageous communicators during the annual, inspirational event that brings together prominent leaders in our community in a celebration of empowered women communicators.
    This year’s noteworthy honorees, all representing the County of Santa Barbara, epitomize this year’s theme—Navigating Uncharted Waters—as they’ve shared information and helped steer community response through months of unprecedented crises. They are Gina DePinto, Communications Manager; Van Do-Reynoso, MPH, PhD, Director of Public Health; Suzanne Grimmesey, MFT Public Information Officer/Chief Quality Care and Strategy Officer, Department of Behavioral Wellness; Mona Miyasato, County Executive Officer; Terri Nisich, Assistant County Executive Officer; Jackie Ruiz, MPH, Public Information Officer and Health Care Program Coordinator, Public Health.
  • Old Boney Mountain Hot Summer Night Festival is back and will take place Thursday, July 14 at The Gardens at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks. Consisting of unlimited craft beer, wine, spirits, hot sauce and food tastings, this year's theme is "Bringing People Together." Over 100 small-batch hot sauce companies from around the world are participating in a pre-judged event. Festival-goers can sample sauces while enjoying live music and local cuisine. Festival attendees can also donate to cast their vote for the “People’s Choice Award” for their favorite culinary experience, favorite hot sauce label and participate in a silent auction. Singer/songwriter Wais is performing live. The festival's main beneficiaries are the Ventura County Fire Department Widows, Orphans & Assistance Fund and the Old Boney Mountain Foundation For Kids.

    Festival hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. VIP entry begins at 5:00 p.m. and tastings end at 8:30 p.m. An awards ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets start at $60. Space is limited.   • Local music professionals, organized by flutist Caitlin Boruch, have joined together to channel their talent and passion for performing into Music for Ukraine: Benefit Concert Series for Humanitarian Aid, a fundraising concert series where 100% of donations benefit UNICEF's coordinated response to the crisis in Ukraine. These concerts will feature a diverse selection of classical music, spanning works by the Great Masters to Ukrainian folk songs, which will inspire you while providing a direct means to support those in such desperate circumstances. Please join us for these compelling musical performances, turn your concern into action, and have your spirit lifted among a like-minded community. Tickets are free to the public and donations are encouraged. Concert series and single event sponsorships are available for a fixed donation. 100% of all donations support UNICEF’s humanitarian response efforts directed towards children and families in Ukraine and neighboring countries offering a safe haven to those displaced.

  • Rev. TJ Woodward is the featured speaker at Unity of Ventura, Sunday, May 1. Services are at the Santa Paula Room in the Poinsettia Pavilion (3451 Foothill Rd., Ventura). Services begin at 10 a.m. Rev TJ's topic this week is “Living From Inner Vision." He quotes Byron Katie: "Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to change the world so that they can be happy. This hasn’t ever worked, because it approaches the problem backward." His talk will explore his "5 Steps to Conscious Creation." Music during the service will be provided by Smitty and Juljia West, Ojai-based artists known for their uplifting sounds and vocal harmonies.   • The four candidates running for Ventura County Sheriff and District Attorney will participate in “Justice in Ventura County: A Candidate Forum,” exploring the social- and racial-justice concerns they’d face in office. The forum is sponsored by a coalition of community-based organizations, and will be held on Wednesday, May 4, from 6-8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Pacifica High School in Oxnard. The forum is free and open to the public. Proof of vaccination required and masks are strongly recommended.
  • SLO based company Stilspoke is hosting the Hidden Valley Experience on the weekend of May 20th-22nd. This event will highlight the incredible food and culture of the hidden gem that is the Cuyama Valley. The event will be centered around a gravel bike ride led by professional cyclist Christopher Blevins. This event is for anyone who is interested in cycling, Californian history and culture, good food, and community building.
  • KCLU's General Manager Mary Olson will be MCing the Southeast Ventura County YMCA National Day of Prayer Breakfast again. The breakfast is Thursday, May 5 at CLU’s Gilbert Sports Center in Thousand Oaks. Local officials and members of houses of worship will give invocations. Local musicians will provide the entertainment. The prayer breakfast is a time when all faiths can join together as one and pray for our community, nation and the world. The prayer breakfast is one of the largest in Ventura County. It will be from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Over 150 people are expected to attend. Individual tickets are $25 and include a full breakfast.   • Soroptimist of Conejo Valley is presenting this 3rd Annual "fun" 70-mile Poker Run that starts at Ventura Harley-Davidson in Camarillo and continues along a beautiful ocean coastal route, with a stop at the Rock Store & final destination at Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas. Proceeds to benefit Human Trafficking Awareness and Assistance efforts in the Conejo Valley & Ventura County, and the Soroptimist Dream programs.
