    Dr. Rachel Toles, a renowned Clinical Psychologist and criminal expert, explores the terrifying minds of the world's most infamous serial killers. Through her personal research, she uncovers surprising motivations behind these heinous crimes and delves into why we, as human beings, are so captivated by such horrors.

    With extensive experience in both clinical and forensic evaluation settings, Dr. Toles has dedicated herself to understanding the motivations, behaviors, and patterns of dangerous criminals, particularly serial killers. Beyond her clinical practice, she collaborates with law enforcement agencies, providing valuable information for criminal investigations.     Most serial killers live what seem like normal lives, amongst their neighbors, commiting unspeakable killings for years before being apprehended.   • Blurring the lines between classical and contemporary, San Francisco-based Alonzo King LINES Ballet is renowned for its impeccable technique, captivating dancers and rich visual works. Alonzo King’s newest creation, Deep River, uses spiritual music from Black and Jewish traditions alongside original compositions by Jason Moran to assert the power of hope in the face of seemingly impossible odds. The piece premiered last year to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary and is described by King as a reminder that “love is the ocean that we rose from, swim in, and will one day return to” – and that love can set us free.

  • Grammy Award winners Roomful of Teeth have carved themselves a niche as one of America’s most interesting contemporary vocal ensembles. Collaborating with artists and thinkers from around the world, the group seeks to amplify voices old and new and expand the capabilities of the human voice. Their engaging program features works by founding member Caroline Shaw, special guest Gabriel Kahane and other composers known for creating meaningful and adventurous new music.

    UCSB Arts & Lectures is pleased to announce that Roomful of Teeth with Gabriel Kahane has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 24 at 4 PM. The venue remains the same: Hahn Hall at the Music Academy in Montecito.

  • Composer and Musician Kaki King brings her show Modern Yesterdays to the Grant R. Brimhall Library on Wednesday, February 28 at 7:00 pm.

    Considered one of the most unique and influential guitarists of our time, Kaki King continues to deconstruct and redefine the role of solo instrumental artist though virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. Her now-signature multi-media performance, both provocative and moving, uses projection mapping to present the guitar as a tool that can shape both music and video content, all triggered (and often improvised live) via her Ovation Adamas Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar, customized specifically for her multimedia performance. Art, sound, and motion will be on full display in this stunning display of music and video.

    Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” composer and guitarist Kaki King is a true iconoclast. Kaki King is known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, energetic live shows, use of multiple tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar, and her diverse range in different genres. Over the past 10 years, the Brooklyn-based artist has released six extraordinarily diverse and distinctive albums, and performed with such icons as Foo Fighters and Timbaland.

    She has played for audiences worldwide in innumerable world tours, playing venues and festivals as diverse as Sydney Opera House, North Sea Jazz Fest, the Krannert Center, The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi, the Ferst Center For The Arts, MASS MoCA, Kennedy Center, MOMA, North Sea Jazz Fest, Vancouver Folk Fest, Singapore’s Mosaic Festival, Japan’s Fuji Rock festival, the Festival of Arts & Ideas, and more.
  • SLO Friends of the Library returns to the Vets Hall for the 45th Anniversary of our large book sale event from February 29 to March 3. FOL Members will have early access to the sale on February 29 from 3 - 9 pm, followed by public sales on March 1 - 3 from 9 am to 6 pm daily. FOL memberships may be purchased in advance at slofol.org or beginning at 2:30 at the Vets Hall on February 29. 40,000 books, CDs, and DVDs for children, teens, and adults will be on sale across numerous categories. Most books will be priced at $1.50 per inch; CDs and DVDs at $.50 each. On Sunday, March 3, prices will be reduced further to $5/bag or $10/box from 1 to 6 PM. There will also be a specialty sale area for higher-value books. Come out and support the SLO Library!

    An intimate evening of Greek music and dance in the historic Covarrubias Adobe

    Join us for an intimate concert in our Spanish era adobe introducing Mana Mou Pono (Mama Mia), a captivating Greek ensemble based in Santa Barbara.

    This dynamic group features six talented musicians, including five UCSB music alumnus well versed in music cultures of Greece, and the wider Near East.

    Presenting music from Mainland Greece to the Islands, Mana Mou Pono performs on zithers (santouri & kanun), lutes (oud, lauta, baglama, tzoura, nautilauta), clarinet, vocals and percussion. They will also be jointed by captivating guest dancer, Ariel Kasha Celi.
