The Elite Theatre Company is proud to announce its upcoming production of The Latinx Experience: Featuring Journey of the Skeletons, A Dia de los Muertos Story – a play by Dr. Max Branscomb directed by Juliana Acosta. The Experience runs for five weekends, beginning with classes and workshops the weekend of September 9th.

The play will run each weekend beginning on Friday, Sept 16th with a final performance on Saturday, October 8th. Sunday October 9th will be a Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration. Each performance weekend will also feature a variety of Latino Artists from our community, including dancers, poets, storytellers and musicians. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm with a special Thursday performance on October 6th, at 8pm.

Journey of the Skeletons: A Dia de los Muertos Story is a heart-warming comedy that follows a Latino family as they prepare to connect with their loved ones who must pass through the underworld to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. However, as fate would have it our beloved characters encounter challenges on their journey including the Lord of the Underworld herself.

Each performance will also feature a variety of Latino Artists from our community, including dancers, poets, storytellers & musicians. General admission $20; $17 for Students, Military & Seniors. Special group rate of 5 people at $10 per ticket. First weekend workshops led by Mr.G from the Inlakech Cultural Arts Center.

Despite lifelong aspirations of a career as an actor and writer, MaryLee has never been able to commit to, or finish, well...anything. Even with her daddy's undying support. And the cacophony of voices in her head, the loudest of them being her 'Feary Godmother,' don't help. Now in her fifties, and with a Sundance screenwriting competition deadline looming that could be a life-changer, she clings to Anais Nin's words, "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." With less than three days to "blossom," however much a post-menopausal woman can blossom, MaryLee needs to overcome her fears, stop dreaming and start doing-and it all begins with this script. But it's called a deadline for a reason...some people are going to have to go. Directed & developed by Jessica Lynn Johnson. Audiences are invited to the Opening Night post-show reception.

Sometimes you need to (literally) lose a part of yourself in order to discover who you truly are. What if you have been Perfect all along? How much precious time have you wasted living like you aren’t? Actress Jannica Olin was the stereotypical blonde blue eyed Swede. Her long hair had always been a big part of her identity. Until suddenly, she lost it all. In (IM)PERFEKT, Jannica takes us on a journey of exploring and uncovering that which we think we are, have to be and maybe, ultimately aren’t. The Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula invites you to join us for the next installment of our popular series, Local History Happy Hour. In this series, local authors and historians will sit down with The Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw to discuss their unique perspectives on our region’s history and take questions from the audience.

The next episode features John Krist, author of Living Legacy: The Story of Ventura County Agriculture. John Krist is an award-winning photojournalist and former CEO of the Farm Bureau of Ventura, the region’s oldest and largest agricultural association. He is the author of three books on California’s parks and wilderness areas, and his most recent book Living Legacy: The Story of Ventura County Agriculture is at once a local history, a photo essay, and a vital lesson in modern farming. His timely commentaries on land-use policy, natural resources and environmental issues have been published in newspapers throughout the United States. Today he continues to work as a consultant, writer, editor and researcher.

We are thrilled to partner once more with the Santa Paula Art Museum and Pierce Brothers Cemetery to present a community-wide celebration of Dia de los Muertos for the city of Santa Paula!

As one of three celebration sites located in the city, the Agriculture Museum will host cultural dance performances, display ofrendas created and contributed by people in the community, and provide fun craft activities and face-painting. We will also be serving horchata and have pan de muerto!

Financial aid staff will assist students in accessing funds for college

Moorpark College, Oxnard College, Ventura College and Ventura College East Campus are holding free Cash 4 College workshops to help students apply for funds to help with college costs. Funds can be used for tuition, books, housing, transportation, childcare, computers and more.

In-person workshops are scheduled for Oct. 8 and 22. The workshops are free and open to the community; anyone may attend a workshop on either date and can drop in at any time during the events.

Bilingual financial aid staff will assist students in completing applications for the 2023-2024 school-year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Students can also access information about basic needs support (food, clothing and housing assistance), tutoring, academic counseling, mental health services and other student services.
AB 132 now requires school districts to confirm seniors have completed the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application before graduating in 2023. Cash for College events can help students get ahead.

Trekking Ambassadors (http://trekkingambassadors.com/), a Santa Barbara-based international trekking organization presents a 5K Trail Run - Hike “FUN-draiser” on Saturday, November 5th at 11:00 AM. Proceeds will benefit the adventure hiking team on a mission to deliver critically needed solar lights and reading eyeglasses to remote villagers in the Mount Everest region. Additional beneficiaries are Santa Barbara Wellness Trekking Ambassadors’ non-profit umbrella organization), Unite to Light, dedicated to providing low-cost solar light and power to those without electricity across the globe and The Waldorf School of Santa Barbara. The event will be held at Tucker’s Grove Park, located at 4800 Cathedral Oaks Road. To register as an individual, family or team, click here. There will be a raffle for gift baskets; gift certificates for sport equipment and excursions; gourmet foods; luxury items and more. There will also be chair massages, a giant chocolate chip cookie bake sale and body composition/antioxidant readings.

October 1962: The USSR introduced nuclear weapons into Cuba bordering the US, which America saw as radically destabilizing the “balance of terror” and posing an existential threat. War was narrowly averted by a compromise that removed the weapons and guaranteed Cuban independence. February 2022: Russia shattered post-Cold War European peace. It viewed an independent Ukraine bordering its territory as an existential threat, the result of Western aggression. Might frustration tempt Russia to escalate across the nuclear threshold to find peace on its own terms? Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in 1994; had it kept its nukes then, would Russia have been tempted to invade now?

The potential for nuclear destruction grows. What might we learn about crises involving nuclear powers? Cuba and Ukraine are examined in terms of context (Cold War v. globalization), political aim (expansion v. defense), strategic operation (nuclear threat v. denial) and possible outcome (stalemate v. accommodation).

Dr. Herbert Gooch is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at California Lutheran University. He formerly served as Director of the Masters in Public Policy and Administration program and Assistant Provost for Graduate Studies at Cal Lutheran. A graduate of U.C. Berkeley in History, he holds a M.B.A in Management and both masters and doctoral degrees in Political Science from UCLA. He has written extensively and is a frequent commentator on political affairs locally and statewide. He has been at Cal Lutheran since 1987 and lives in Newbury Park with his wife. His interests include politics, film and travel.
