Young Giraffe Sent From Santa Barbara Zoo Dies in Ohio

A giraffe born at the Santa Barbara Zoo has died in Ohio.

Santa Barbara Zoo officials said Asha, one of the zoo's Masai giraffes, had to be euthanized Sunday.

Asha was only one year old when she was relocated to a zoo in Toledo to start her own family as part of the breeding program there.

She was in quarantine at the time when she broke her right hind leg while being moved between stalls on Saturday.

Zoo officials say Asha became startled for unknown reasons and fell, severely injuring a leg that could not be immobilized or surgically repaired.

Asha was born at the Santa Barbara Zoo in March of 2015.
