Voters Deciding Special Election For Congressional District In Ventura, Los Angeles Counties

Tuesday is election day for some Ventura and Los Angeles County voters.

Democrat Christy Smith and Republic Mike Garcia are facing each other in a special election for the 25th Congressional district. Smith is currently a member of the State Assembly, while Garcia is a businessman and retired military pilot.

The two are seeking a post vacated last year by Katie Hill, a Democrat who resigned as the result of a sex scandal. The winner will complete the rest of Hill’s term, which expires in January.

Regardless of who wins today’s election, it’s expected they will face off again in November for a full two year term in the post.

The 425,000 registered voters in the district received vote-by-mail ballots, but some people are opting to vote in person.

The district includes a slice of eastern Ventura County, and areas like Santa Clarita in Los Angeles County.
