Detectives Say South Coast Theater Company Hit By Embezzlement

There are new troubles for a non-profit South Coast theater company which has had major financial problems over the last decade. Ventura County Sheriff’s detectives say the organization’s office manager embezzled more than $130,000.

Mary Urias worked for Thousand Oaks based Five Star Theatricals, which was known as Cabrillo Music Theater before changing its name. Five Star staged musicals at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. It almost folded a few years ago because of its financial problems.

Detectives say the 56 year old Oxnard woman wrote checks to herself from Five Star’s accounts, and used its credit cards to pay some personal bills.

Urias is charged with grand theft, identity theft, forgery, and preparing false documents. Investigators are looking for more victims, saying she may have victimized other past employers in the same way.
