Crews Battling Afternoon Fire In Lake Sherwood Area Of Ventura County

VENTURA COUNTY AIR UNIT

LAST UPDATE: 6:00 P.M.

A vegetation fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in the Lake Sherwood area of Ventura County.

The Sherwood Fire has now grown to between 30 and 45 acres.

It was first reported at 3:45 this afternoon, close to the 100 block of China Flats Road, an area of light-to-moderate brush.

Smoke quickly became visible throughout the Conejo Valley.

233 firefighters have been called to the scene, including 12 hand crews and 16 engines.

Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are also dumping water on the fire with tankers en route from Riverside County.

Captain Mike Lindbury of the Ventura County Fire Department tells KABC Television that Potrero Road is closed between Westlake Blvd and Lake Sherwood Drive because of an increase in traffic, people wanting to see the fire up close.

So far, no structures are threatened and there are no evacuation orders.

Temperatures and humidity are moderate, and winds are relatively light -- conditions that do NOT favor rapid spread of the blaze.
