There's outrage in Isla Vista over plans by a company to evict hundreds of tenants as part of efforts to renovate three apartment complexes it bought recently.

But, Santa Barbara County's ability to intervene may be limited legally.

Anger over plans by the new owners of three South Coast apartment complexes to evict hundreds of residents bubbled over Tuesday. Dozens of the upset tenants asked Santa Barbara County Supervisors for help.

The Chicago-based company Core Spaces bought three apartment buildings in Isla Vista. The company announced plans to renovate the more than 260 units. But, because the work will be extensive and time consuming, it’s evicting the hundreds of residents.

The news left students, and low income residents stunned.

Santa Barbara County Supervisors are planning a special meeting to look at the situation. But, the county’s attorney says even if they pass an ordinance tightening evictions, it legally can’t be retroactive to those who already have notices.
