  • Presented by the Ventura County Astronomical Society
    at the Moorpark College Forum

Our speaker for Friday November 18th at 7:30 PM is Victor Jimenez, the Telescope and Astro-imaging Specialist at Woodland Hills Camera and Telescope. His topic is ”Amateur Telescopes and Equipment: Beginning and Advanced” and will be timeless because many VCAS members are planning on purchasing a first time telescope during the holidays. Also, some advanced amateur astronomers want to know what new equipment is available in our hobby.

Mr. Jimenez has been doing astrophotography for over 5 years and has been interested in this hobby for 30 years. His first taste of astrophotography started with a Nexstar 4se and a modified web camera to do planetary work. Then Victor acquired a Canon t5i that was modified for astrophotography and it was rewarding, giving some of his best work. A major game changer was transitioning over to a dedicated astronomy camera and adding a standalone wifi connected control system. Victor enjoys pushing the boundaries to help both backyard amateurs as well as universities in making their systems efficient and making the users proficient. With a willingness to learn and a lot of patience anyone can get into this field and take home a part of the night sky for themselves.

  • The story of jazz began as a joyful expression of emotion, fire, and sexiness. The Jazz Messengers String Quartet wants to bring you back there through a fresh look at old jazz. No horns, no drums, but a stripped down, blistering expression of hard hitting jazz on string instruments. Sultry vocals and a crazy amount of rhythm, and a depth of passion, make the Jazz Messengers String Quartet a group for people that love the bop standards and also for people who want to hear the old straight jacket of jazz ripped off.
  • "Love Our Water" is the theme of a Community Forum for all ages that will focus on Ventura County's fresh water and its sustainability, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at Chalice Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newbury Park.

The forum will feature activities for adults and children, including speakers, a nature video, making a watershed model, planting an acorn, Vegan snack making and a "hungry, hungry water hippos" game for kids. Water-saving grilled veggie burgers will be served at noon.

The event will begin in the Chalice sanctuary, where Cumash elder Julie Tumamait-Stenslie will share indigenous stories about water. Following that will be a showing of a video for all ages, "The Story of Our Oaks," which explains the Ventura River watershed and the importance of oak trees in its ecosystem. Then attendees will move to activity stations in the Chalice fellowship hall and outdoors at an acorn planting station, rotating among activities so everyone can learn and ask questions.

Representatives from sustainability organizations will be on hand to throughout the event, including Caty Wagner, Southern California Organizer with the Sierra Club, Kat Selm of The Nature Conservancy, John Brooks with the City of Thousand Oaks Sustainability Division, Mary Freed from the Organic Gardening Club of Ventura County, and Barbara Leighton and Gordon Clint from the Chalice Climate Action Team.

The event is presented by Chalice Community Forum, a program of Chalice Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Conejo Valley. Co-Sponsors are the Conejo Climate Coalition and the Chalice Climate Action Team.
Organizers caution that space is limited to attend the event at Chalice, 3327 Old Conejo Road in Newbury Park. To register, visit forum.chaliceuu.org. For information, visit that website or contact Randall Edwards by e-mail at forum@chaliceuu.org or through the church office at (805) 498-9548.

  • Live Performers’ Workshop presented by Jodi Farrell

Have you ever wondered what performers do to prepare for a performance in front of a live audience before the actual day of performance? There's a lot more to the naked eye than you might think!

During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to witness "tricks of the performing biz" that go into creating a professional and entertaining performance for you, the audience. Performing artists who will be participating in this workshop will get a chance to work out their performance skills in front of you as you receive the privilege of witnessing the kinds of techniques that go into presenting a more professional, believable & entertaining performance.

Each participant will get a chance to perform a song, then receive suggestions and recommendations from the award-winning music teacher and performer, Jodi Farrell (jodifarrell.com), on how to improve his or her performance. After the coaching, they will get to perform their song again and work on implementing the suggested techniques, gaining a truly "in the moment" experience of honing their performance skills in front of a live audience.

Interested in becoming a live audience member and observing this special, intimate workshop?
Tickets are just $10.00 to attend. Tickets can be purchased at NambaArts.com or at the door.
