“El Oz” Book Signing and Reading with David Damian Figueroa
The book is intended for ages 8 and up and was written as something for families to read and experience together. 1:00PM – Books are available for purchase (all proceeds donated by Mr. Figueroa to the MVC), and Mr. Figueroa is available to sign copies 2:00PM – Reading from El Oz by author David Damian Figueroa followed by Q&A session Author, producer and farmworker rights activist David Damian Figueroa debuts his second book, “El Oz,” a new children’s book for ages 8 and up that centers around Dolores, a young Mexican girl from a fictitious town El Pueblito de los Milagros, and her chihuahua named Pepito who find themselves in a strange land after a violent rainstorm. There, they encounter a series of fantastical characters and wild adventures as they seek the elusive El Oz to help them return to their home. David Damian grew up working in the fields in Buckeye and Yuma, Arizona – the birthplace of Cesar Chavez. His two official hometowns and his family provided the inspiration for “El Oz.”
About the Author: David Damian Figueroa is an activist, community organizer, storyteller, poet, filmmaker, and music producer who grew up working in the agricultural fields of Southern Arizona. As a child, his mother taught him the art of positivity through traditional Mexican regional songs, storytelling, and dichos (sayings) to help pass the time during long hot days in the agricultural fields and when they cleaned houses together.

Fifty and Better Special Lecture: Ukraine: Cultural Heritage Under Siege
There is no excuse to say we did not know…we cannot turn a blind eye…we cannot fall back on a lack of knowing, as was done in WWII. The world is watching the terror of war unfold upon the Ukrainian people and the destruction of Ukrainian Cultural Heritage continue on a daily basis. Join us in learning about the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites that exist in the Ukraine. We will discuss their importance and what is jeopardized by this Russian invasion. We will look at what has been destroyed, what is being documented and what is being done by the art world to assist in preserving the Ukrainian Culture at this moment. Christine Maasdam holds a Master in Humanities and a B.A. in Cultural Geography. Her art studies include The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, The Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center in D.C. and Post Graduate studies in Antiquities Trafficking and Art Crime at the University of Glasgow. She is a graduate of the Art Crime Investigation Seminar led by Robert Wittman, founder of the FBI's National Art Crime Team. Christine is a member of the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection and holds a certificate from Trident Manor on Protection of Cultural Venues. Christine received Sotheby’s certification on Determining Value: An Appraiser’s Perspective. She has spent over a decade as a LACMA docent and is an active volunteer at the City of David archaeological dig in Israel. Fifty and Better was designed to offer university-level courses and lectures (no tests, no homework) taught by experts in the field, and to host social engagement activities for individuals age 50 and older.
Public Safety and Local Police Reform
Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub, head Public Defender Claudia Bautista and the county's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Phin Xaypangna, will be among the speakers at an online Community Forum titled Public Safety and Local Police Reform on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
Also participating will be Vanessa Valdez, President of the Ventura County Latinx Bar Association. The forum will be moderated by Cynthia Salas, President of the Santa Paula Latino Town Hall.
The forum will serve as a progress report on actions that the county has taken to enhance public safety and racial equity in its workforce, programs and services, focusing on local police reforms, and what more might be needed.
Last year, the county established the Public Safety Racial Equity Advisory Group. Xaypangna will report on the formation and mission of that group, and Public Defender Bautista, who is the advisory group's co-chair, will speak about its progress and future plans.
Sheriff Ayub will discuss local police reform efforts and Valdez will talk about experiences and perceptions from the community. Spanish interpretation of the program will be available.
Links in English and Spanish to register for the online forum are available at forum.chaliceuu.org. The forum, a program of Chalice Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Conejo Valley, is free; donations are welcome to support future events.
For information, visit the Community Forum website or contact Randall Edwards via e-mail at forum@chaliceuu.org or by phone through the church office at (805) 498-9548.

Driving Through Landfills
The average American accumulates 4.4 pounds of waste a day. According to the EPA, nearly 42% of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the production and use of goods, including food, products and packaging.
What if we could go to zero waste: reducing what we use, reusing what we can, and sending nothing to our landfills?
Join CMATO for Driving Through Landfills, a special presentation by Matt Trouts of Athens Services, and learn how to reduce waste, conserve resources and create a healthier community for everyone. This presentation complements the Museum's current exhibition, Landscape Through the Eyes of Abstraction.
Admission to is free but pre-registration is required.
