  • The Mardi Gras Ball is the largest fund-raiser for Community Conscience. Your support ensures RENT-FREE office space for 13 Human Service non-profits who provide assistance to those in need. With the proceeds from the Ball and other donations, Community Conscience provides office space rent-free in the Human Services Center to thirteen local non-profits, enabling them to more effectively serve our community. The Ball is expected to be attended by more than 300 community leaders, guests, and media. Together we will celebrate your commitment to the health and wellness of this community. Festivities begin at 5:00 PM with a champagne reception, hors d’oeuvres, entertainment by the Riverboat Dixie Jazz Band, and the silent auction. A wonderful dinner will follow, along with a live auction, King & Queen recognition, and dancing to Fifth Avenue Entertainment.
  • Cellist Yoshika Masuda and pianist Hyejin Kim will perform works for cello and piano written by female composers, with compositions spanning 250 years. The concert will feature hidden gems, well-known works, and a piece written especially for the duo by Indian American composer Reena Esmail.

    Masuda is director of string studies and an assistant professor of music at Cal Lutheran. He began playing the cello at the age of 5 and studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with distinction. He has performed across the United States, Europe and Asia and holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he studied with the legendary cellist Ralph Kirshbaum. Donations will be accepted.

  • Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30, 8 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2 p.m.In this rock ’n’ roll adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” presented by the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, Shakespeare meets Green Day when Millennium Oaks High School student Helen studies too much and falls asleep at her “Midsummer Night’s Dream”-themed prom. After waking up, Helen finds herself a character in the Shakespearean comedy. Set in 1999, the musical features the popular live rock band ’90s Nation playing parodies of popular ’90s rock ’n’ roll hits.

  • Cantor Michael Stein, Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer and actor, who has performed at the White House and on Broadway, will be in Ventura to discuss “The Power of Music in Enhancing Spirituality”. The event will take place on Monday, January 10th, from 3-5 pm at Congregation Am HaYam.

    Cantor Michael combines his rich Jewish heritage based in New York’s Conservative movement with a successful career in the music and entertainment industries. Cantor Michael, who was a contestant on The Voice, Season 7, has been the Hazzan at Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills for over 20 years. The event is possible through a grant from the Pacific Southwest Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
  • Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) kicks off the holiday season with its annual holiday fair and festival, 11 a.m., Dec. 4, and continues noon to 4 p.m., Dec. 5.

    Featuring distinctive artwork for gift-giving created by SCIART artists-in-residence and member artists, live music, free activities for kids, food trucks and more.

    Visitors can browse through 40 professional artist studios and additional vendors, meeting the artists and watching them at work creating paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs, jewelry, weaving and more.

    This year’s festivities also includes an outdoor exhibition of chrysalis lanterns, each measuring at least 4 feet. Admission is free and there is ample free parking.

    This day-long event will feature free hands-on holiday craft workshops, festive drinks, and guided walk-throughs of MCASB's current exhibition.

  • King Tides are winter's highest tides, and they will arrive on December 4 and 5 and January 2 and 3.

    The California King Tides Project needs your help to photograph these high tides to visualize the impacts of future sea level rise.

  • “The Otherworld” is an exhibit of paintings that depict alternative realities. It seeks common ground among psychedelic explorations of the California hippie movement, science fiction, fantasy, spiritual visions and artistic conceptions of how the world might be re-created.

    The exhibit features paintings by Cal Lutheran faculty members Tim Hengst and Michael Pearce in addition to Thomas Akawie, Mandy Cao, David Choong Lee, Chang Dai Chien, Uriél Danā, Roger Dean, Jeff Echevarria, NoMe Edonna, Dawid Figielek, Alex Grey, Rick Griffin, Gonzalo Hernandez, Utagawa Hiroshige I, Jacaeber Kastor, Guy Kinnear, Mars-1, Bill Martin, Brian Mashburn, Cliff McReynolds, Jasmine Alexandra O, Scott Prior, Damon Soule, Daniel Sprick, John August Swanson, Gage Taylor, Graham Toms, Oliver Vernon, Charles Francis Winans and Kirsten Zirngibl.

    Pearce curated the exhibit. Carnegie Art Cornerstones and Cal Lutheran’s Artists and Speakers Series are sponsoring the free exhibit.

  • These oil paintings by Carl Dobsky, a legendary figure in the representational art scene, depict the savage arena of crude and cruel human behavior. His vivid and violent canvases feature bourgeois men and women caught in the act of looting wantonly, fighting for food, shrieking over shopping, babbling incoherently about a flood, and snorting coke and shooting selfies while a wildfire burns behind them.
