The Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club, CVARC, is holding a Technician Level Amateur Radio License course. The FCC Technician license is the gateway to the world of Amateur Radio (often called ham radio), from the local VHF and UHF bands to worldwide on the "shortwave" bands. The course is held on 5 Saturday mornings on September 2, 9, 23, 30, and October 7, from 8:00 am to noon. The location is the Community Room at the East County Sheriff Station, 2101 East Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks. A testing session for licensing is also being held October 15th. The COVID-19 pandemic renewed interest in the global history of infectious diseases. This year’s lecture series presented by History Department faculty and other experts focuses on different periods in world history when societies faced pandemics and their consequences. Former Cal Lutheran President Chris Kimball, a history scholar, will address the influenza pandemic of 1918-20, known unfairly as the Spanish flu, which arrived near the end of World War I and killed tens of millions of people. That human toll, on top of the war dead, provided the backdrop for dramatic political, social and economic changes. In the United States, the fight against the Spanish flu included advances in medicine and controversial strategies such as mask wearing — and, like today, public health became a heated political issue.

Cal Lutheran, the Thousand Oaks Grant R. Brimhall Library and Ventura County Library are sponsoring the free series, and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation provided grant funding.

DAVID CIPRIANI & AUSTIN WRINKLE WORKSHOP & PERFORMANCE
7-string, hybrid electric and Indian Slide Guitarist/composer/singer-songwriter Dave Cipriani, and world-renowned percussionist & drummer Austin Wrinkle touch the mystic and the earthy; bringing intense studies of Indian music, African, Jazz, Balkan, Classical, Rock and more into their unique world-music, heart embracing style of improvisation, compositions, and songs.

WORKSHOP: The World of Guitar!

I’ll demonstrate several different types of unusual guitars (7-string fingerstyle, electric guitar, hybrid guitar/bass, Indian) and show you some of the cool things that can be done that are out of the ordinary – playing multiple parts simultaneously, playing bass & guitar at same time (!), music from other cultures and more. We’ll show how ideas can cross over from one style to another or how they are similar or different.

The workshop will take place from 5:00-6:00, the performance at 7:00

The Community Environmental Council (CEC) and CarpEvents will co host the 2023 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival—which is free to attend—at Alameda Park Saturday, April 29, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tommy Quayle is a singer, songwriter, and bandleader out of Ventura, California. Tommy plays all kinds of shows all over Southern California and occasionally makes his way to places like Austin, Texas and his home state of Massachusetts. From solo acoustic work to seven-piece rock band, Tommy brings his high-energy rock-folk-blues-country-punk mix and commanding stage presence. He’s been at it for almost 40 years playing tons of shows and releasing over 50 original songs on 6 releases. He has shared the stage with many music luminaries for thousands of people and still loves playing tiny coffee houses.

Since writing his first song in the fourth grade Tommy has always heard the siren call of music. He truly loves music. Not just his. All of it. He likes digging into a Stones rocker or a Neil Young ballad just as much as playing one of his own tunes.

Jarabe Mexicano captures the nostalgic spirit of their border roots with their brand of "Bordeño-Soul," which honors the musical tastes and cultural influences of its members. Jarabe, which translates to 'concoction,' highlights the eclectic mix of genres they g5rwperform ranging from Mexican Folk, Rock & Roll, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock, Trio Romántico, and popular Cumbia. Their traditional Mariachi string instruments and Norteño-inspired drums complement dramatic vocals in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, and show how this multi-generational ensemble embraces change while still honoring the past.
