On May 1, 1517, riots broke out in London because some citizens, convinced that “foreigners” were taking their jobs and livelihoods, demanded the removal of all “strangers.” Thomas More, then a city official, attempted to intervene and restore the peace.

Many years later, William Shakespeare contributed to a collaboratively-written play titled Sir Thomas More (c. 1591–93). Scholars believe that he penned a powerful speech for More, delivered as he resists the mob and defends the so-called “strangers.” Known as “The Strangers’ Case,” this stirring defense of immigrants and refugees is the greatest Shakespearean speech that no one knows and, according to some scholars, these lines represent the only example of a creative work written in Shakespeare’s own hand.

To mark the anniversary of the 1517 riots and More’s speech, join UCSB Library and the Department of English on May 1 as a few intrepid souls perform “The Strangers’ Case" at a pop-up event in the Library’s Mountain Courtyard (1st Floor, Mountain Side).

This event is held in connection with the exhibition Infinite Variety: The Many Lives of Shakespeare’s Texts, on display through June 12 in the Sara Miller McCune Arts Library (1st Floor, Mountain Side).

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara's annual Kids Draw Architecture Sketch Session is being held on Sunday, April 19th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Riviera Park in Santa Barbara. Each year, kids sketch an important architectural landmark alongside local architects and artists who offer encouragement and guidance. This year's featured site is the Historic Riviera Park, built in the early 1900s and known for its Mediterranean-style architecture, scenic landscaped grounds, and views of the ocean and downtown Santa Barbara. The sketch session is free and drawing materials are provided.

Ruth Cohen finally finds the perfect Jewish man to love, marry, and above all, bring home to her Conservative family. But she neglected to ask one, small question: Is he Jewish? Or, can he at least fake it?

“Jewish for Dinner” is based on the short film “Jewish for Lunch,” with most of the same cast. It won Best Comedy at the Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival, Best Comedy and Best Actor (Rylie Decocq) at the Mentone Film Festival, and Best Jewish Short Film at the Anatolian Film Festival in Turkey.

The Jewish Heritage Series creates and presents experiences that keep the unique richness of Jewish theatre alive and honor the historical and cultural importance of Jewish heritage. On the cutting edge of Jewish theatre and education, it has touched the lives of over a million people. More than 500 artists have participated, including Annie Reiner, Brenda Krantz, Sammy Shore, Jerry Mayer, Rose Leiman Goldemberg, Connie Stevens, Milton Berle, Groucho, Harpo and Bill Marx. We welcome the Jewish for Dinner team to the fold.

This two-day gathering, presented in partnership with EcoFarm, brings farmers, scientists, and community partners together to explore agriculture as a living ecology — where certified organic practice, regenerative outcomes, Indigenous stewardship, and the careful tending of water meet in relationship. Together, we will address the questions that sit at the edge of the future: how to remain viable, how to steward water wisely, how to support labor, and how to sustain farms across generations. In looking forward, we also look back — recognizing that many of the resilience practices needed today are rooted in the wisdom of those who have long worked in balance with the land.

Certified organic provides a trusted, regulated foundation for responsible production. Regenerative agriculture builds upon that foundation by focusing on outcomes: healthier soils, improved water retention, stronger ecosystems, and greater adaptability in times of uncertainty. True sustainability must also include the human dimensions of agriculture — fair labor, steady cash flow, and the ability to endure through long economic and environmental cycles. The resilience practices of the past, from Indigenous land stewardship to multigenerational farming knowledge, offer guidance for navigating what lies ahead.

Through field days, panels, and dialogue grounded in practice, participants will explore how water, soil, labor, markets, and certification systems function together within a dynamic ecology. The aim is to create space for honest questions about the future while learning from the adaptive strategies that have carried farming communities through change before.

May 4th will be held at Rancho dos Hermanas in Fillmore, CA and will focus on Avocados and Citrus. May 11th will be held at McGrath Family Farm in Camarillo, CA focus on Strawberries.

THE FRIENDS OF THE BUELLTON LIBRARY ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT THEIR SPRING ART SHOWCASE IN HONOR OF
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND MOTHERS’ DAY.

This exhibit for the entire month of May is entitled,“Creating from Within,” featuring four local artists from the Santa Ynez Valley,
expressing the love-bond between mother and child, the joy of life, sharing thoughts and feelings without words, and visually representing deeply felt emotions as part of a self-soothing process.

The four artists exhibiting in our Spring Art Showcase are Renée Kelleher, Maggie Powell,
Sherry Uyeda & Alexandra Yakutis presenting in various mediums: oils, graphite, water
colors, colored pencil, charcoal, and ceramic.

This art will be on display for the entire month of May inside the Friends’ Room at the Buellton
Library, which will be accessible for viewing during our open store hours (3 days per week, 2
hours each day), as well as, for the Opening Reception. Our open hours are: Mondays
10am-noon, Tuesdays 2-4pm, and Saturdays 11am-1pm.

Our goal for our art showcases is to highlight Local Artists from the Santa Ynez Valley and bring
art appreciation to the community. The Friends’ Room is also a used book store, where we
raise funds to support the Buellton Library, host lecture series, and other events.

We will be having a wine & hors d'oeuvres Artist Reception on Sat., May 2nd, from 4-6pm.
