  • From the mid-50s until the mid-60s, AM radio underwent radical changes in what was played. Early on, different genres of music were strictly limited to what demographic a station was aiming for. This resulted in the broadcasting of R&B to an exclusive African American audience, country music to a rural listener, and pop music was usually relegated to “block programming.” But that began to change in the 50s and 60s. This two-part lecture will explore the reluctance of any genre to actually “crossover” to another as well as the societal changes and tastes of the public that ultimately led to change. We will listen to the hits that changed American music forever!

  • This joyous and poignant musical follows the beloved Yiddish story-teller and his mespoche, as he spins tales of his loves and losses, his fame and his failures, his travels, his travails and the tremendous optimism that kept him going against all odds.

    Based on Sholom Aleichem’s letters and tales, the controversy surrounding his stories and plays, and his passionate involvement in the creation of a new homeland coupled with the personal recollections of those who knew him first hand, Aleichem Sholom is written by the internationally acclaimed team of Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie, with lilting songs by Emery Bernauer, E. Rudie and Sholom Aleichem himself.

    The musical stars veteran performer Chris DeCarlo, who once again assays the role of the beloved author, a characterization which has been enjoyed by more than a quarter of a million audience members, and Evelyn Rudie, who has created and portrayed more than three dozen Sholom Aleichem characters in over 2,000 performances to date.

    Aleichem Sholom is presented by the Santa Monica Playhouse Jewish Heritage Project, supporting productions that keep the unique richness of Jewish theatre alive.

    ‘Sholom Aleichem’ means ‘Hello, peace be with you.’ For Santa Monica Playhouse it means ‘richness in Jewish theatre for the community to enjoy.’

    Santa Monica Playhouse is supported in part by grants from the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Ahmanson Foundation, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture and Playhouse PALS.

    Join historian Neal Graffy to learn the full story behind John Peck Stearns and his deepwater wharf.

    It was Monday, September 16, 1872, was when the first ship tied up at John Peck Stearns’ new wharf at the foot of State Street. Prior to this date, ships had to pause a mile or more off shore while cargo and passengers were transferred to small boats and rowed ashore and back. It was a time-consuming, expensive and miserable experience. But no more! Stearns had built more than a wharf, this was the door that would open Santa Barbara to the world. For 150 years Stearns Wharf has endured storms, fires, earthquakes, changing times and the threat of bombing by the most dastardly of villains. A true survivor, it has overcome all that nature and man has thrown at it.

  • As one of the most dynamic chamber music ensembles on the classical music scene today, Trio Céleste has pushed the boundaries of chamber music and redefined the art form with its exceptional virtuosity and passion. The trio is comprised of musicians Iryna Krechkovsky, violin; Ross Gasworth, cello; and Kevin Kwan Loucks, piano.

    Works to be performed on the program are:
    - Piano Trio No. 1 in A Minor, Vasyl Barvinsky (1888-1963);
    - Trio sur des mélodies populaires irlandaises: Gigue, Frank Martin (1890-1974)
    - Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)

    Barvinsky was a Ukrainian composer who was arrested by the predecessor to the KGB, and all his manuscripts and published works in his possession were destroyed. After his release from Soviet prison, he spent the rest of his life recreating lost compositions.

    A light reception to meet the artists will follow the performance. Suggested donations are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for students, or pay-what-you-can.
