Is science funny? For over 32 years, Marc Abrahams has proved unequivocally that the answer is yes. The celebrated creator of the Ig Nobel Prizes will speak at a special free public event on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Faulkner Main Gallery at the Santa Barbara Library.
Please join us for a truly unique event where Marc will highlight the funniest of the Ig Nobels and reflect on a career that honors scientific achievements through humor.

Don Louis Perceval: His Vision of the West

Join the Museum for 1st Thursday, on May 1, from 5:00-8:00pm, to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition, Don Louis Perceval: His Vision of the West.⁠

Don Louis Perceval (1908-1979) was born in Woodford, Essex, England and raised in Los Angeles, where he attended the Pasadena Military Academy and Chouinard Art Institute.⁠

As a young man he traveled throughout the Southwest, becoming enamored with the natural beauty of the landscape and its Hopi and Navajo peoples, and began documenting their life through his sketches. After studying at the Royal Academy and service to the Royal Navy, he was drawn back to the west and commissioned to create advertisements for the Rio Grande Oil Company. After a life dedicated to his work he spent his final years in Santa Barbara. ⁠

Experience Perceval's passion brought to life in this new exhibition, curated by Marlene Miller.

Join us for a curatorial talk from Robyn Wallace and Elana Kundell discussing Studio Channel Islands current exhibition, Transformed. Trans is a Latin prefix, meaning across, beyond, or into another state or place.

Until the morning of November 6th, 2024, the objects on display were tools for living and creating.
On that day, the preternatural forces of the Mountain Fire brought them into another state of being, and our community of Camarillo joined millions of people, plants, and animals around the globe who have undergone a radical transformation as a results of catastrophic natural disasters. Whether functional or sentimental; machine or hand made, the history and functionality of these objects has been displaced by a patina that puts our own existence in perspective.
Like us, they are survivors, unified by the scars of the fire.

You can help create a biological baseline for organisms in our counties by identifying as many native organisms as you can using the free iNaturalist app on your smart phone. There is a video class on using iNaturalist (https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/home). You do not have to identify every organism you see as experts will be checking the ids of your observations. Be sure to take a full shot of your observation and a close-up of the flowers or organism you are photographing. The app will put your observations in the City Nature Challenge Santa Barbara County Project or Ventura County Project where you can see our results. You will be joining over 600 groups all over the world for this bioblitz. All ages and experiences welcome.

This joyous and poignant musical, back for a limited engagement to celebrate the author’s yahrzeit, follows the life of the beloved Yiddish story-teller as he spins tales of loves and losses, fame and failures, travels, travails and the tremendous optimism that kept him going against all odds. Based on his letters and tales, the controversy surrounding his stories and plays, and his passionate quest to honor the universality of the human spirit and celebrate our common humanity, he reminds us always that we have more in common than in conflict.

Playing to sold-out houses until the day before the lockdown, the delightful musical, back by audience request for a limited run, is written by the internationally acclaimed team of Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie, with lilting songs by Emery Bernauer, E. Rudie and Sholom Aleichem himself. Audiences are treated to an in-depth look at the joyous and poignant events that inspired the foolish philosophers, philosophical fools, comical shtetl folk and not-so-comical scoundrels that populated Sholom Aleichem's world.

Join the California Nature Art Museum and Artist Mona Lewis for an earth pigments & natural paints workshop on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, from 1:00PM-3:00 PM. During this workshop, participants will get an introduction to making and using earth pigments, which are colors collected from the local natural landscape with beauty, sustainability, and fun in mind! You will learn how to identify rocks suitable for paint, best practices for collecting respectfully, and how to turn stones into pigments. Participants will also make their own paints using a mortar and pestle, then use their pigments to paint an image of their choice.
About the Instructor:
Mona Lewis is an artist and arts educator in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, specializing in revitalizing the lost art of using plant dyes and earth pigments and teaching students how to use them in their work. She has been a Waldorf educator since 1998, and is co-director of the Waldorf Practical Arts Teacher Training program.
The class fee for this workshop is $65 for CalNAM Members and $80 for CalNAM Non-Members, all supplies included.
