Anya Shah is a student, reader, hot-drink enthusiast, farmer, and poet. A high school senior at Thousand Oaks High School, Anya has pushed the boundaries in search of knowledge. Anya was the only student to be a year ahead in her English classes. Additionally, she was consistently taking new classes at local community colleges and reading all the books she could find. Her love of reading is only matched with her love of hot drinks. She can typically be found enjoying a book with a cup of hot chocolate or chai in hand; when not there, she can be seen wandering the rows of her family farm and eating oranges directly from the tree. This love of reading and nature has fueled her poetry as she writes about her place in community and the world. Anya takes pride in giving back to the community—from picking and donating thousands of pounds of produce to spreading an appreciation of poetry and art. As the 2023-2024 Ventura County Youth Poet Laureate, Anya is driven to inspire positive change and foster deeper connections with her community.

Brandon Bishop is a student at California State University, Channel Islands, where he studies Psychology and Creative Writing. He has had short stories and poems published in the school’s Island Fox creative writing journal, and was one of the winners of the Ventura County Poetry Festival’s student category. He currently lives in Ventura County.

Kat Gutierrez is a Creative Writer from Cal State Channel Islands University. She recently was a winner in the 2024 college level Ventura County Poetry Festival Competition, and is about to be published in Island Fox magazine. While she primarily writes in fantasy, she also writes poems about real world issues and is an advocate of both Women's and LGBGTIA+ rights.
  • Santa Barbara Permaculture Network participates in
2024 I Madonnari Chalk Art Festival
    Come & Be Inspired!

    Memorial Day Weekend: May 25 – 27
    Free, 10am-6pm

Location: Old Mission Santa Barbara, 2201 Laguna St, SB, CA 93105

Join Santa Barbara Permaculture Network for our sponsored art square at the 38th Annual I Madonnari Chalk Art Festival that takes place every Memorial Day weekend at the Old Mission Santa Barbara. Sponsored by the Children’s Creative Project, Santa Barbara Permaculture Network began participating in 2020 with Nature inspired art squares, with themes that included beaver & wetlands; the amazing world of fungi; coastal kelp forests; & the biologically alive soils beneath our feet.

Our 2024 theme shares the work of ecological design pioneer John Todd and his “Living Machines” that work with nature using only sunlight, plants, & microorganisms to clean & restore waterways & oceans from toxic waste created by human activity. In 2023 John Todd was honored with the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award.

The I Madonnari Festival is special as it gives the public an opportunity to watch the artists in action, sometimes with a chance to talk with them. For the second year, local artist Kristen Sell will be the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network featured artist.

The festival also has music, food, and visitors from around the world attending, a chance meet new friends at the tables provided on the Mission lawn.

Our art square is usually located below the Old Mission steps, on the right side as you face the Mission. Hope to see you there!

  • Dear A&L Patron,

Due to unforeseen and extenuating circumstances, José Andrés is unable to join the UCSB Arts & Lectures series this Sunday. Mr. Andrés’ ongoing commitments to World Central Kitchen as they mourn the loss of their team members have made his attendance at the event impossible at this time.

We have worked closely with his team to reschedule his appearance for Thursday, May 23 at 5:30 PM at the Arlington Theatre. We offer our sympathies to José Andrés and the entire World Central Kitchen organization during this incredibly challenging time.

Please note the new date and time in your calendar, and retain your original tickets for admission on May 23. If you ordered tickets on someone else’s behalf, or gave yours to a friend, please be sure to alert the current ticket holder.

Now more than ever, we feel the work of José Andrés and World Central Kitchen deserves close attention, acknowledgement and recognition.

This weekend’s free screening of We Feed People and free Community Food Solutions Showcase will continue as scheduled on Sunday, April 21. Join us on Sunday for the screening and to meet local food solutions organizations addressing issues of food insecurity and sustainability in our community.

We look forward to seeing you at the live event with José Andrés on May 23.

    Sincerely,
    Arts & Lectures
