ABSOLUTELY HALLOWEEN! for ages 2 to 102 “is absolutely great!” showmag.com
Santa Monica Playhouse is excited to present the 17th anniversary production of its modern Halloween classic, as part of the Playhouse’s “We’re Back” musical play series. It’s the classic Family Theatre Halloween musical for Kids 2 to 102 – the heartwarming Rudie-DeCarlo tale of the aptly-named Candy, a sweet young girl who learns some surprising lessons about life, love, laughter, and sugar, from a delightful array of characters who take her on a magical All Hallow’s Eve adventure. And you, the audience, help Cattypuss, Patty Patches, Hester the Jester and Fifika the French Fortune Teller save Halloween for one more year.
As witching hour approaches, kids, and parents, too, discover the value of team spirit, friendship, sharing, making choices, and moderation, especially when it comes to treats and sweets. Now an audience favorite holiday tradition and back by audience demand for its 17th October run, ABSOLUTELY HALLOWEEN is one in a series of original Rudie-DeCarlo fairy tale musical comedies that make up the award-winning Family Theatre Musical Matinee Series for Kids 2 to 102, now celebrating 53 years as it cuts across the imaginary generation gap by providing an experience the entire family can enjoy.

Linda Vallejo is an American artist known for painting, sculpture and ceramics, creating work that visualizes what it means to be a person of color in the United States. Phung Huynh is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator whose practice includes drawing, painting, public art, and community engagement. Her work challenges beauty standards by constructing images of the Asian female body vis-à-vis plastic surgery to unpack how contemporary cosmetic surgery can whitewash cultural and racial identity. Her work of drawings and prints on pink donut boxes explores the complexities of assimilation and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States.

A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency
UCSB Library is pleased to present Nelson Lichtenstein in the Pacific Views: Library Speaker Series for Fall 2023. Lichtenstein will speak about his new book A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism, published September 12, 2023, by Princeton University Press.
Chaucer's Books will sell copies of the book before and after Lichtenstein's talk.
When Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, he ended 12 years of Republican rule and seemed poised to enact a progressive transformation of the American economy, touching everything from health care to trade to labor relations. Yet by the time he left office, the nation's economic and social policies had instead lurched dramatically rightward, exacerbating the inequalities so troubling in our own time. In his talk, Lichtenstein reveals why Clinton's expansive agenda was a fabulous failure, and why its demise still haunts us today.
Nelson Lichtenstein is Research Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. An historian of labor, business and politics, he is the author or editor of 19 books, including State of the Union: A Century of American Labor; The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created a Brave New World of Business; a biography of the labor leader Walter Reuther, and most recently, A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism. He co-edited Beyond the New Deal Order: From the Great Depression to the Great Recession and a companion volume, Capitalism Contested: the New Deal and Its Legacies. Lichtenstein writes opinion pieces for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Dissent, Jacobin, and The American Prospect.
