Ventura County and federal health officials have released more information about a man quarantined at Naval Base Ventura County for possible exposure to coronavirus. They held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to try to reassure people the quarantine operation isn’t posing a risk to the community.
The man was in the part of China where the coronavirus apparently started, and then flew into LAX Sunday. He was quarantined at the Naval Base Ventura County as a precaution.
Dr. Robert McDonald, with the Centers for Disease Control, says the man isn’t showing any symptoms of having the virus. He says they are doing regular health monitoring, and should symptoms develop, the man would be moved to a hospital geared up to deal with someone one who is infectious.
Ventura County Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin says that while some county residents are concerned, he says the quarantine is actually helping to prevent the potential spread of the virus to the region.
The man is being quarantined in a base hotel unit restricted to visitors. Federal health workers are the only ones in contact with the man. Health officials say with flights coming into the U.S. from China now limited, it’s possible this may be the only time the base is used to quarantine a traveler.
