South Coast Community College System Moves Graduation Online, And Into The Parking Lot

Evan Reinhardt

With graduation season in full swing, a South Coast community college system is combining virtual and in person ceremonies - with a twist.

The Ventura County Community College District matriculated thousands of students this weekend, on the internet, and in the parking lots of its member colleges.

That includes Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura Colleges.

Bernardo Perez, Trustee Chair with the District, says the combination of a digital yearbook, plus drive-thru ceremonies Saturday on multiple campuses, is an unprecedented move.

“This is a remarkable unique response because we’ve never done this," Perez says. "We’ve always had live graduation ceremonies.”

Zubair Sidhu graduated from Moorpark College and picked up one of the congratulatory yard signs that schools have been giving out.

He says that turnout was high, and some people even got creative with their cars.

“Somebody kind of dressed their car up like a graduate, so they put a blue tarp over their hood, and they taped a box and made a little graduation cap on their roof,” Sidhu says.

The digital yearbook for Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura Colleges is expected to go online Monday.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
