Three South Coast Colleges Take Step Toward Greener Campuses

Three South Coast colleges are taking a step toward going green, with a new effort from the Ventura County Community College District.

Ventura, Moorpark, and Oxnard college comprise the VCCCD, and the three schools will start construction on new solar-covered parking next year.

“It’s a visible manifestation of the district doing the right thing to save energy and reduce our carbon footprint, says ” Dr. David El Fattal, the Vice Chancellor of Business and Administrative Services.

El Fattal led the effort contracting a private company to build the solar paneling system.

The campuses will then each buy between two to three megawatts of power from the company at a fixed rate, the very rough equivalent of the energy for 1500 homes.

Chair of Board of Trustees Dianne McKay says that the project will also likely be a hit with the people using it: “The students have wanted us to use more sustainable practices at all of our campuses, so I think they’ll be very pleased when it’s done.”

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
