Central Coast Jail Inmate Dies

A Central Coast jail inmate has died, and drugs may be connected to it. San Luis Obispo County Jail deputies say inmates told them Ernest Leonard Ortiz was unresponsive in the dorm area of the jail Friday afternoon. Staff members started CPR, and administered Narcan, which is used to counter a drug overdose.

But, efforts to revive the 56 year old Grover Beach man were unsuccessful, and he later died. He was in jail for a probation violation.

Deputies say a short time later, another inmate who had been seen with Ortiz collapsed from an apparent drug overdose. He was also treated with Narcan, and he survived. Jail officials are investigating to try to determine exactly what happened.
