Man Convicted Of Brutal Sexual Assault Of Homeless Woman On South Coast

A man could face more than 50 years in prison after being convicted of brutally sexually assaulting a homeless woman.

Prosecutors say that last April, Kahlil Byers ran across the victim as she was sleeping in the entrance of a building on East Carrillo Street.  They say the 24 year old man woke up the woman.

She told investigators she was worried about her safety.  She tried to walk away, but he grabbed her, dragged her behind a dumpster and beat and sexually assaulted her.  The woman finally escaped when a car parked nearby, and distracted the attacker.  In addition to the sexual assault, she had multiple broken bones and needed 23 stitches on her face.

A team of detectives linked Byers to a pair of early morning business burglaries which happened the same day.  They were able to identify and arrest him several hours after the attack.  He'll be sentenced in April.
