Investigators say that a vehicle involved in a fatal head-on crash Friday morning in Santa Barbara County was stolen.

The crash happened just before six a.m. Friday, about eight miles northwest of the Highway 1-Highway 101 intersection near Gaviota. It snarled traffic for much of the morning commute.

CHP investigators say the stolen car was being driven northbound when it crossed into the southbound lanes of the highway, colliding head on with another vehicle.

The investigators say the driver of the stolen car, a 35 year old Carpinteria man, was fatally injured. Three people in the other vehicle suffered serious injuries.

They say in addition to the vehicle causing the crash being stolen, alcohol and/or drugs may have been a factor in the collision.
