South Coast Veteran Potential Candidate For Congressional Medal Of Honor

A Ventura County veteran who helped saved a number of lives of his fellow Marines, and sailors during the Vietnam War is now in line to possibly receive the nation’s highest military honor.

Sergeant Major John Canley of Oxnard fought in the Tet offensive, and was seriously wounded as he led his unit against overwhelming odds. Some of his fellow service members contacted Democratic Congresswoman Julia Brownley of Westlake Village, asking that the four medals Canley was awarded be upgraded to the nation’s Medal of Honor.

Brownley introduced a bill which was signed into law which waves the time limit on giving the award, so the final decision is now in the President’s hands. Canley is in Washington, D.C. as the Congresswoman’s guest at Tuesday night's “State of the Union” speech.
