A Central Coast hospital is celebrating the largest gift in its history, which will help build a new emergency department.

French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo received a $5.5 million dollar grant from Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer towards building the new ER.

Medical Center officials say the existing four-decade-old ER is too small, and too outdated to meet the growing demand.

Plans call for construction to start next year on a $13 million dollar new facility which will be named after the Oppenheimers.
