After a tough week of news, laughter could be the best medicine at San Luis Obispo Comedy Festival.

Four days of comedy featuring 40 comedians across 20 shows in ten venues, kicked off on Thursday night as the San Luis Obispo Comedy Festival.

SLO Comedy Festival organizer Eric Shantz told KCLU he wanted to create a place to bring comedians together in the spirit of the famous Edinburgh festival.

"They're not household names necessarily," he said of the comics, "But they've been seen on HBO, Comedy Central, Colbert, Fallon, SNL. So you'd see them and say, 'Oh I know that guy,' cos you've seen them."

"It's a fun time and the shows are themed and rated so the later the night get, the darker the humor gets," Shantz added. "If you like a clean show, go to the early shows, if you like a dirty show, go to the late shows."

"On Saturday, all the audience votes for their favorite two comedians and from those vote counts the top seven go to the Best Of The Festival," said Shantz

The line up is here.
