Pedal power: Community bike ride on South Coast to promote the benefits of cycling

City of Ventura

How often do you cycle? A community bike ride in Ventura county is encouraging us to take to two wheels.

It’s part of a plan to promote Active Transportation – that is walking, cycling – or even rolling – instead of getting in our cars.

Two free five mile community bike rides on the Westside of Ventura take place on Wednesday and Saturday.

Jeff Hereford is Principal Transportation Engineer at the City of Ventura.

"There's a lot of benefits to active transportation, " he told KCLU.

"That includes healthy living and it's an equity thing too. The cost of owning a vehicle is a lot and not everyone can afford it."

The City of Ventura’s Active Transportation team is hosting two free community bike ride events on the Westside on Wednesday, October 20, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, October 23, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Both events will start at BikeVentura, located at 490 N. Ventura Avenue.

Community members interested in participating in the free bike ride events are encouraged to register online at www.ActivePlanVentura.com. The ride is open to all age groups. For the safety of all participants, masks and social distancing will be encouraged.

Caroline joined KCLU in October 2020. She won LA Press Club's Audio Journalist of the Year Award in 2022 and 2023.

Since joining the station she's won 7 Golden Mike Awards, 4 Los Angeles Press Club Awards and 2 National Arts & Entertainment Awards.

She started her broadcasting career in the UK, in both radio and television for BBC News, 95.8 Capital FM and Sky News and was awarded the Prince Philip Medal for her services to radio and journalism in 2007.

She has lived in California for ten years and is both an American and British citizen - and a very proud mom to her daughter, Elsie.
