An estimated $30,000 in vandalism is being cleaned up at the Santa Barbara Mission after an attack with paint.
It was believed to have happened early Wednesday morning.
Spray painted on the walls of the iconic mission were words like "rape" and "genecide [sic]."
Splattered areas of paint where on the front bricks as high as the bell tower, and on the white walls nearby.
There was also paint strewn on the front doors, steps, and stone surfaces.
Father Larry Gosselin said he was very sad at the sight of the vandalism, but would pray for those responsible, and the mission said it would begin the cleanup immediately.
The area was cordoned off the entire day.
Police are investigating and reviewing surveillance camera footage.
