Head-on crash leaves three dead on Highway 101 in Ventura County

Investigators are trying to figure out why a car jumped onto Highway 101 in Ventura County going the wrong direction early Thursday morning, causing a head on crash which killed three people.

The collision happened at about midnight on the southbound 101 near Seaward Avenue, in Ventura. A CHP officer on patrol spotted the wrong way vehicle near Oxnard Boulevard, and tried to get other units in position to stop it. Still, they couldn’t reach it in time, and the crash happened just minutes later. Officers say the vehicle hit speeds of around 100 miles an hour leading up to the collision.

All three people were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of the people haven’t been released, but the CHP says the wrong way driver was a 34 year old man from Santa Paula.

The accident disrupted traffic on the southbound 101 for more than six hours.
