Popular South Coast Beaches Closed To Try To Prevent Spring Break Party

"Floatopia" event in Isla Vista in 2009 overwhelmed resources, and has prompted spring break shutdown of the community's beaches since then to try to prevent a reoccurance

Santa Barbara County announced some popular South Coast beaches will be closed this weekend to try to prevent the reoccurance of a massive 2009 party that overwhelmed public health and safety resources, and left tons of garbage in its wake.

The Santa Barbara County Community Services Department is closing Isla Vista's beaches Saturday and Sunday.

The unsanctioned, unsponsored "Floatopia" event in 2009 attracted tens of thousands of teens and college students, overwhelming restrooms and trash cans.  Public safety resources were also swamped by the flood of local, and out of the area partygoers.

The county has closed the Isla Vista beaches for the last six years during spring break.  County officials took the action after word started circulating via social media that a "Floatopia" event would take place on Saturday.
