The former preschool building on East Fesler Street in Santa Maria has been purchased by CommUnify, which provides Head Start child care and early education in Santa Barbara County.
"There's a tremendous need in the Santa Maria community and in particular in this neighborhood, said Patricia Keelean, CEO of CommUnify.
She added that the extra 70 early childcare places are critical in the community.
"This is not a head start. This is an even start for children who are living in poverty and don't have the opportunities that many other children have. What this means for families is that they can go to work; they have a safe place to bring their child where that child is going to learn and thrive."
Work to renovate the building is due to start soon, and it’s expected to open by summer 2028.
