A powerful cyclone in East Africa has left tens of thousands of people homeless.

Cyclone Freddy – which may become one of the most powerful on record - has caused loss of life, property, and critical infrastructure - displacing more than 650,000 people in East Africa last month.

"It's barely made the news but it has displaced hundreds of thousands of people," said Keri Murray from Shelterbox USA – who are based in Santa Barbara.

Murray said the non-profit organization are on the ground in Malawi, providing thousands with emergency shelter and other essential items amid a desperate need for support.

"They desperately need help and this is adding an horrible issue on top of an existing food insecurity issue," she told KCLU.

ShelterBox USA is also helping people affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, those displaced by the monsoon flooding in Pakistan, and the worst drought to hit East Africa in 40 years.

Caroline joined KCLU in October 2020. She's won LA Press Club's Southern California Audio Journalist of the Year Award four times, in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026.

Since joining the station she's also been awarded with 12 Golden Mikes, 9 Los Angeles Press Club Journalism Awards, 4 National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards and five Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Excellence in Writing, Diversity, Use of Sound & more.
