An unsanctioned, unsponsored spring break event in Santa Barbara County had a surge in arrests this year, despite efforts by authorities to control it.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies say there was a significant increase in the number of people who showed up for the unofficial event in Isla Vista over the weekend known as Deltopia.

The number of arrests went from four in 2022 to 23 this year. The number of those cited skyrocketed from 34 to 151.

Santa Barbara County closed Isla Vista's beaches over the weekend, to try to discourage parties. But, people flocked to apartments. There was a spike in emergency medical calls, with many for acute alcohol intoxication.
