While we might get our vitals checked in an annual health-check, but it’s not always as easy to tell how healthy our oceans are.

Scientists from UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis & Synthesis have been gauging ocean health – based on water quality, biodiversity and a number of other factors. The assessments are then rolled into a score called the Ocean Health Index (OHI).

"We have a score of 69 out of 100," explained Ben Halpern, one of the scientists behind the study.

"There are some things that are doing better but still plenty of room for improvement," Halpern told KCLU.

He says that these factors and more contribute to ocean health and ultimately, the health of the entire planet.

Caroline joined KCLU in October 2020. She won LA Press Club's Audio Journalist of the Year Award for three consecutive years in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
