  • This lecture will provide a brief history of space telescopes and why they are built, followed by the development, testing, launch and the “29 Days on Edge” for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The lecture will include an overview of the JSWT’s unique design, the instruments onboard, where it will observe the universe from, and when we can expect to see the first images from the most powerful space telescope ever launched. Christopher Mick is the Executive Director for the STEM educational nonprofit, Space St. Croix, which brings free Space-themed STEM programming and teacher support materials to all Hudson, WI. area schools, as well as the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and home-school programs at the Hudson Area Public Library. Christopher is a NASA Solar System Ambassador, OSIRIS-Rex Ambassador, member of the NASA Museum & Informal Education Alliance and was recently on the Education Advisory Board for Infiniscope, as well as a blogger for the Space Science Institute. The Fifty and Better program was designed to offer university-level courses (no tests, no homework) taught by experts in the field, and to host social engagement activities for individuals age 50 and older.
  • This virtual presentation will introduce a recent project of The Society of California Pioneers Museum and Library. Featuring rarely-seen primary sources from the collection that the San Francisco-based organization has amassed and maintained since 1850, Her Side of The Story illuminates the experience of women during the early years of statehood. You will learn how to access a recently discovered and transcribed collection of over 800 unpublished, first-person accounts written by pioneer women. John Hogan has curated exhibitions and created education programs for local museums, including The Society of California Pioneers Museum and Library, for almost twenty years. Drawing from his experience as both a teacher and a theater artist, he designs education programs, online content, and museum exhibitions to foster a humane regard for those who came before us.   • The fourth annual Santa Barbara County Farm Day is set for Saturday, September 17. It's the once-a-year opportunity to "meet all the hands that feed you."

    Visitors can use an online Farm Day Trail Map to build a custom itinerary to navigate between growers throughout the Santa Maria Valley. The public will experience a day of agricultural activities, farm tours, giveaways and onsite farmer's markets, plus hear from the local farmers who grow the food they eat.

    Farm Day is free to attend. Tour stops range from farms with kid-friendly activities to wineries with complimentary wine tastings. Tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participating growers include Babé Farms, Bonipak Produce, Main Street Produce and Riverbench Vineyard & Winery (check the Farm Day website for a full list).

    Santa Barbara County Farm Day is organized by the nonprofit Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG). SEEAG’s mission is to educate students and the greater community about the farm origins of our food and agriculture's contribution to our nutritional well-being.   • Not If But When – An event featuring wildfire awareness and recovery – presented by the Ventura County Library, the Museum of Ventura County, and the Ventura County Library Foundation. The Ventura County Library Foundation and the Museum of Ventura County are partnering with the Ventura County Library to present an upcoming special event. At 2pm on Saturday, April 23, 2022, the Ventura County Library will host a screening of Radu Sava’s film Not If But When: Wildfire Solutions. This event will occur at the Museum (100 E Main St, Ventura, CA 93001).

    The film, awarded Best Environmental Visions Film at the Sacramento International Film Festival, discusses how wildfires are becoming a global issue. California is one of the places that is hit the hardest. The film is based on interviews with leading experts from state, federal, and grassroots organizations, water agencies, community partnerships, and more. This film event will complement the Rising from the Ashes tour of homes rebuilt after the Thomas Fire, presented by the Ventura County Library Foundation on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Catherine completed “Portrait of a Neighborhood”, a 100 foot mural in the interior of the Casa de Anza Library in 2001, and is featured in prestigious art collections such as the City of San Buena Ventura, the City of Oxnard, the Ventura County Museum of Art and History and the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas. She presented a one-person exhibit of her bas-relief paintings at the Ventura County Museum of Art in 2008 and represented the Museum at the Los Angeles Art Show in 2009. She is influenced by the Hudson River School, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, John Singer Sargent, Diego Velasquez, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Lucian Freud. She received her MFA in Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design and has studied at Harvard Business School and the University of California Santa Barbara in Fine Art. Much of her work was destroyed in the Thomas Fire in 2017. Her subsequent series on that cataclysmic event was a part of her recovery.
