  • This year, Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) will hold their traditional celebration of reflection, special speakers, poetry, musical entertainment, and the lighting of their Tree of Remembrance to honor the many that are missed this holiday season, online via Zoom featuring event emcee Rev. Julia Hamilton on Wednesday, December 15th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. PDT. Although Hospice of Santa Barbara will not hold in-person ceremonies this year, for a suggested donation of $15, you will be able to dedicate a star on their Virtual Tree of Remembrance. You can showcase your star(s) with your loved one’s name, photo and a special message from you. Actual trees will still be displayed at each of the four locations. HSB will place traditional paper stars, for each digital star purchased, on the location of the purchaser’s choice (Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta and Montecito).   • Santa Barbara’s treasured holiday tradition is back! The Santa Barbara Festival Ballet presents The Nutcracker, at The Arlington Theatre for three dazzling live performances Saturday and Sunday, December 11-12.

    “After a year’s hiatus, we’re thrilled to be celebrating our 46th anniversary with a brilliant ensemble and world-renowned guest artists from Dance Theatre of Harlem,” said Valerie Huston, SBFB Resident Choreographer and Interim Executive Director. “We adapted during the pandemic with zoom classes and parking lot practices which kept us on pointe to deliver our most spectacular showcase ever.”

    Creating holiday memories for all ages, the enchanting production features stunning sets and costumes with a full symphony orchestra bringing Tchaikovsky’s iconic score to life. A cast of hundreds takes audiences on a magical journey with heroine Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Nutcracker, and the Mouse King, where dancing tin soldiers, mischievous mice, sparkling snowflakes and waltzing flowers add an unforgettable spark to this time-honored fantasy.

    The beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier are a highlight of Clara’s adventure, performed by acclaimed guest artists Alexandra Hutchinson and Kouadio Davis from Dance Theater of Harlem. The role of Clara will be danced by Evelyn Mills, joined by a gifted ensemble of students from UCSB and SBFB. Elise Unruh conducts the live orchestra.

    Nutcracker performances get underway Saturday, December 11th at 2:30pm and 7:00pm, and Sunday, December 12 at 2:30pm. Following state Covid protocols and safety guidelines, patrons over 12 years of age are required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test result within a 72-hour window.

  • The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House (SYVHM) is thrilled to announce the return of the Santa Ynez Valley’s most popular fall event celebrating Western lifestyle and horsemanship in the community - the 37th Annual Vaquero Gala, Show and Sale,

    The 3-day fundraising event, honoring the unique culture and equine skills of the California ``Vaquero” (cowboy), takes place at SYVHM, located at 3596 Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez, California. The Friday evening Gala takes place November 12th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. - a historically sold-out event. There will be cocktails and wine generously provided by Gainey Vineyards and a sumptuous dinner prepared by Testa Catering. The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the annual “Vaquero of the Year” award, which goes to John McCarty, a legendary cattleman. Tickets are $200. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Vaquero Show, online at santaynezmuseum.org or at the door.

    On Saturday, November 13th and Sunday, November 14th the Vaquero Sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a shopping experience that features a gathering of noted artisans and collectors from throughout the western United States as well as local vendors. The craftspeople will have on display for sale hand-tooled leather saddles, braided Vaquero-styled riatas, bridles, reins, and other Vaquero inspired horse tack as well as quality Western artwork, apparel, jewelry, memorabilia, house decor and collectibles. Entrance fee is $5.00 at the door.

    On Saturday, November 13th, There will be traditional Vaquero horsemanship demonstrations by Heather Kornemann. Also, colorful demonstrations of traditional dances that were popular during the days of local Vaquero fiestas performed by Baile de California.

    Visitors will enjoy a delicious lunch available for sale catered by the Elks Lodge. NEW this year is Pig Roast and Barn Dance at the Pork Palace, with live country-swing music by Monte Mills & the Lucky Horseshoe Band at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $65 per person, $165 per family.

    Health and Safety requirements for attendance: In accordance with Santa Barbara County Health Department COVID mandates, all patrons must bring and wear their own face covering that fully covers both nose and mouth with ear loops (or similar) to hold it securely in place inside the galleries. Bandanas, gaiters and masks with external valves are not permitted. Face shields alone are not adequate protection. Mask-wearing is also strongly encouraged in outdoor spaces.
