  • ALISON DES FORGES (pronounced DAY-FORZSH). She's a professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where her specialty concerns the central African countries of Rwanda and Burundi. She's also the Co-Chair of the International Commission on Human Rights Abuse in Rwanda, and a consultant to Human Rights Watch Africa on Rwanda and Burundi. Rwanda has descended into civil strife since April 6th, when the Rwanda and the Burundi presidents were both killed in a plane crash. Rebels, mostly made up of the minority Tutsi tribe, have battled the Rwandan government's troops and army, which are both dominated by the Hutu majority. An estimated 100,000 Rwandans have been killed in tribal massacres and clashes between troops and civilians since the beginning of the month.

  • Animal welfare non-profit Canine Adoption and Rescue League (C.A.R.L.) will welcome canine superheroes and their owners to the 2023 Pooch Parade Dog Walk and Pet Expo on Sunday, September 24, at Ventura Harbor Village on the grassy area. With this year’s theme of “Superheroes,” participants will have opportunities to dress themselves and their dogs up as their favorite fictional comic book character. Canine contestants will be eligible for ribbons, prizes and a grand award going to the “Top Dog” of the Pooch Parade. The event will feature an emcee, Ken Vela, who served as emcee at the 2018 and 2019 Pooch Parades, vendors, a silent auction and a Frisbee demonstration with dogs.

  • The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a virtual community forum for all Oxnard residents affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia or those who would like to learn more about local resources. The forum will take place live on Zoom in both English and Spanish on Friday, April 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Programs staff of the Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter will share more about Alzheimer’s, dementia and memory loss, as well as host an open forum to answer questions and facilitate discussions about how the chapter can better serve its local community in Oxnard.     Now more important than ever - an edgy one woman show written and performed by the inimitable Monique DeBose. Through original music and stories of her family’s history, this mixed-race woman (from an African American father from the segregated south and Irish American mother from upstate New York) shares her most vulnerable stories around her exploration of family, race and identity. As an audience member, you get the have the experience of being a fly on the wall for some of the most potent and real conversations from 'the other side'. A heartfelt, funny and intimate look at race and the implications of race-consciousness in America. Yes, it's one woman's story...but audiences from all backgrounds have found themselves and heard their own voices in Monique's story.
