  • “Encoded Gazes: Women of Color on Bias, Power, and Possibility in AI” will focus on women of color critiques and approaches to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Framed through the lens of women of color, this panel interrogates the inherited biases embedded in AI systems, from facial recognition and data training sets to the aesthetic tropes of generative art. Through visual works and critical reflection, the speakers explore how identity, mythology, queerness, and resistance can become tools for subverting dominant technological narratives.

Moderated by Dr. Ana Briz, Assistant Director and Curator of Exhibitions at the AD&A Museum, panelists include artist Kira Xonorika and researcher Dr. Haewon Jeong from the UCSB Center for Responsible Machine Learning. Presented by the AD&A Museum, this panel is part of Brave New Work, a 3-day symposium organized by Brandwell Arts, that will feature artist commissions, lectures, and exhibitions throughout Santa Barbara and Goleta.

Kira Xonorika (Guarani) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tovaangar (Los Angeles, California), working across generative AI, film, robotics, fashion, sculpture, performance, and literature.

Haewon Jeong is Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jeong received her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (’20), where her thesis laid key foundations for coded computing by applying information theory to design reliable large-scale computing systems.

  • “A magnificent trip back in time! I recommend it highly!” Keith Olbermann, ESPN

This just in! A special weekend of Eddie Frierson’s internationally acclaimed MATTY: An evening with Christie Mathewson, for all ages! “One of the Year’s Ten Best Plays! Whether you are a baseball fan or not, Eddie Frierson’s play, MATTY: An Evening With Christy Mathewson,”is a superb theatrical experience. “MATTY hits a home run!” National Public Radio (NPR). Written and performed by Eddie Frierson. Directed by Kerrigan Mahan. Includes a post-show sodas and Cracker Jacks reception with Mr. Frierson.

”Remarkable! This show is as memorable as an exciting World Series game and it wakes up the echoes about why we love baseball. When MATTY comes to your town don’t miss it! A great way to get hooked on baseball again!” USA TODAY

“Matty” is the life story of Christy Mathewson, legendary hall-of-fame pitcher for the New York Giants (1900 to 1916), gentleman, philosopher and first true American hero who inspired a whole generation of fans to make baseball America's pastime. Besides his ballpark records, still among the most impressive ever posted, he was an author of books for boys, toured in vaudeville, made a motion picture, and was a war hero, a coach, a sportswriter and very likely the first major sports figure to be a product spokesperson.

“It’s 100% true that you don’t have to be a baseball fan to be completely engaged by Eddie Frierson’s performance. He leaves the audience with a real appreciation of Christy Mathewson, and the place and time in which he was an authentic hero. On the other hand, if you are a baseball fan, you will be amazed at how much you didn’t know about “Matty,” his contemporaries, and the dramatic baseball events of their time.” Bob Costas, NBC

Frierson, who researched and developed the play, is also a college-educated all-American ballplayer. A baseball scholarship brought him to UCLA to pitch for the Bruins. While there he also pursued a degree in theatre and, as he says, realizing that he would never be a hall-of-famer, bypassed a professional baseball career in order to pursue acting. Staying close to his athletic roots after graduation, he was the head baseball coach at Santa Monica High School while looking for the perfect vehicle to launch his acting career. He found that vehicle with the Christy Matthewson story, spending twelve years researching and developing it into “Matty,” which had one of its first public performances at Santa Monica Playhouse in 1989.

“Charming! Amusing! Great!” Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times

Ironically, Eddie has clearly gone farther in baseball through the stage than he ever would have on the field as it is because of his performance as “Matty” that he was ushered into Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as an “Honorary Inductee.”

Santa Monica Playhouse programs are supported in part by generous grants from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Ahmanson Foundation and Playhouse PALS.

  • Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps are on quite a roll.

Her persuasive pipes slathered in honey and soaked in Texas-bred sass, keyboardist Teresa James and her band, the Rhythm Tramps, have long reigned as one of Los Angeles’ leading contemporary blues outfits, even though their uncommonly imaginative repertoire, much of it supplied by Terry Wilson, James’ husband, producer, and bassist, is by no means strictly limited to the 12-bar form. Their 2019 CD Here in Babylon was nominated for a Grammy in the Contemporary Blues Album category.

Rose-Colored Glasses, the band’s new release on Blue Heart Records, continues that proud tradition. It’s their 12th album and once again showcases Teresa’s enticing way with a lyric and Terry’s prolific songwriting talent, poured over grooves that’ll grab listeners and refuse to let go until the very last notes have rung. A coterie of Texas guitar greats guest on the set, including Anson Funderburgh, Lee Roy Parnell, Johnny Lee Schell, Snuffy Walden, and Dean Parks. “This new album is kind of veering a little bit more into soul,” says Teresa. “But to me, blues is more of a state of mind. It’s where you’re coming from. It’s the attitude and the heart that you bring to it.”

Soon to have a full dozen albums under their collective belt spanning 23 exciting years, Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps remain a staple of the Los Angeles-area blues scene in addition to an international touring artist, with a sound all their own. Moving easily from Texas-style grease and blues into Memphis soul or New Orleans-flavored grooves and all points in between with fun and abandonment, as one critic said, “there are no clichés in this band.”
