Douglass Day Birthday Party and Transcribe-a-Thon
Celebrate Douglass Day and Black History Month by participating in a national transcribe-a-thon. You’ll learn how to bring 19th century Black history to life by transforming digitized documents from the Colored Conventions Project into legible text. This groundbreaking archive documents how nineteenth-century African Americans organized around critical issues such as voting rights, citizenship, education, labor, racial equality, and more.
This event is free and open to the public. There will be birthday cake, music, and a live stream of the national Douglass Day program. No previous transcription experience is required.
Please bring your own laptop/tablet or borrow a laptop from the Library Services Desk in the Paseo to participate in the transcribe-a-thon.
Opening remarks will be made at the start of the event and guests are welcome to drop-in as their schedule allows. Registration is recommended, but not required.
This event may be photographed or recorded.
Cosponsored by the UCSB Library, Department of English, Department of Black Studies, Office of Black Student Development, and the Multicultural Center.
Artist Talk with Madeleine Ignon
Artist Madeleine Ignon will discuss the works featured in 'hold on & let go', reflecting on the last decade of her multimedia practice and the intersections of painting, graphic design, craft and motherhood that inform the exhibition. She will discuss her use of layered spaces, quiltmaking logics, text and the materiality of canvas, as well as the role of language and lived experience in shaping her images.
A public reception will follow from 4:30–5:30 p.m., offering an opportunity to continue the conversation, meet the artist and view the exhibit.
The exhibit continues through March 10 in the William Rolland Art Center. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
AI in Action Speaker Series Launch and Reception
Join us for the launch of UCSB Library’s new speaker series AI in Action Conversations with UCSB Researchers. The event features short presentations by Tobias Fischer (Director, Earth Research Institute), Ben Halpern (Executive Director, National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis) and Rebecca Vega Thurber (Director, Marine Science Institute) on innovative applications of AI in their research, followed by a 30-minute discussion on broader trends, challenges, and ethical considerations, and a reception.
Fischer will present an overview of the use of AI in the Earth Research Institute (ERI) with examples on how AI is used in research projects.
In his presentation titled “Using AI Effectively and Responsibly in Environmental Data Science and Synthesis,” Halpern will share a few highlights of applications and lessons learned on how AI is changing the nature of research projects at NCEAS, and how we can continue to use AI responsibly.
In her presentation titled “Using Deep Learning/AI to explore System Agnostic Microbiome Measures,” Thurber will discuss her work using advanced bioinformatics and deep learning to compare microbiome studies and identify unifying principles of how microbiomes function and thus contribute to animal health. This work aims to synthesize numerous studies on animal microbiomes, revealing system independent microbiome features that transcend hosts. Such work will ideally pinpoint critical aspects of host-microbiome interactions and how they can be used to advance animal health, ecosystem resilience, and resource management.
This event may be photographed or recorded.
Advance registration is recommended as space is limited.

Mozart and American Voices
"Mozart and American Voices" isn't just a concert; it's a journey. First: Laugh along with the chaotic comedy of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. It's elegant, witty, and timelessly funny. Then: Be moved by the stirring stories of the American stage. Feel the optimism of Bernstein's Candide, the soulfulness of Gershwin and the depth of Barber and Sondheim. Whether you love opera, Broadway, or just great music, this program has something for you.
