  • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is pleased to present “Southern California Beach Culture from George Freeth to World War II” a lecture by Patrick Moser taking place on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The presentation, incorporating some of the stories from Moser’s book, Surf & Rescue, will be enhanced with original photographs of the people and places who built California beach culture in the first half of the 20th century. Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for members of the public. There will also be a pre-lecture reception for members only from 6:15-6:45 p.m. Learn more about the event and register here: https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-event/santa-barbara-maritime-museum-presents-southern-california-beach-culture-from-george-freeth-to-world-war-ii-a-lecture-with-patrick-moser/

Moser’s presentation introduces the early history of California beach culture as we recognize it today—surfing, lifeguards, and the image of California’s beaches as places of fun, health, and sex appeal. The arc of that story began with the arrival of native-Hawaiian George Freeth in Southern California in 1907. He made headlines with his rescue of seven fishermen, an act of heroism that highlighted his innovative lifeguarding techniques; but he also funded California's first surf club and coached both male and female athletes including Olympic swimming champion and “father of modern surfing” Duke Kahanamoku. Freeth combined surfing and lifeguarding to create the foundation of what would become an important part of the Golden State’s global identity.

  • Santa Barbara Dentist to Reward Kids for Not Eating Candies During Halloween Event

Santa Barbara Dentist Dr. Michael Carley is holding a candy buy-back event at his office after Halloween.

Parents and kids who bring in their candy stash will get rewarded with $2 for every pound they bring!

Dr Carley, practicing dentistry for 15 years in Santa Barbara, has seen the harmful effects of excess sugar wreaking havoc on one’s health.

“This event will let parents turn trick or treating into a fun and healthy event and reward the child for making correct choices for his body!” Dr Carley said.

Earlier in October, Dr. Carley and his staff delivered over $9,000 worth of free dental treatments to local residents who could not afford dentistry during his Dentistry From The Heart Day.

Dr. Carley shared, “My team and I have always had a slogan: Treating people, not just teeth. Providing a free dental day aligns with our philosophy of taking care of people in need!”

The Halloween Candy Buy-Back Event will be held on:
    Date: November 1 to 7, 2023
Time: 8 am to 4 pm
Location: 2780 State St. #6 Santa Barbara, CA 93105

“Our community can get stronger if we reach out to our neighbors and help those who need it.” Dr Carley concluded.

  • Camerata Pacifica, noted for its adventurous musical offerings, continues its season with an intriguing program of remarkable works for percussion and piano that features two sets of musical spouses, April 1-6, 2025, at four Southern California locations.

The musical athleticism of acclaimed piano duo Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee, spouses who “produce an entirely unified sound… (and) fool our ears into believing all the notes are coming from a single musician” (The Berkshire Edge) is showcased on Stravinsky’s electrifying The Rite of Spring for Piano Four Hands. They also perform Poulenc’s Elegie for Two Pianos, a tender and beautiful memorial to a friend, and J.S. Bach’s Three Chorale Preludes, arranged for piano duo by Hungarian composer György Kurtág.

Camerata Pacifica Principal Percussionist Ji Hye Jung and percussionist W. Lee Vinson, spouses as well and both lauded for their extraordinary talent and enthralling performances, join Dank and Lee to let their mallets fly on Bartók’s landmark Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

The performances are Tuesday, April 1, 7:30 pm, at The Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall in San Marino; Thursday, April 3, 8:00 pm, at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles; Friday, April 4, 7:00 pm, at Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West; and Sunday, April 6, 3:00 pm, at Thousand Oaks’ Janet and Ray Scherr Forum.

For tickets ($75 at The Huntington, Music Academy of the West, and Zipper Hall; $91, including fees, at Janet and Ray Scherr Forum) and information, visit www.cameratapacifica.org.
  • Camerata Pacifica’s season continues with a daring musical mix, including the world premiere of Natural Light, a Camerata Pacifica-commissioned wind quintet by David Bruce, who has forged a unique path in contemporary classical music with his colorful imaginative works. Delivering the musical luster are Sébastian Jacot, flute; Nicholas Daniel, oboe; Jose Franch-Ballester, clarinet; Eleni Katz, bassoon; Ben Goldscheider, horn; and Irina Zahharenkova, piano.

The chamber music program is presented at four Southern California locations on Sunday, March 1, 3:00 pm, at Thousand Oaks’ Janet and Ray Scherr Forum; Tuesday, March 3, 7:30 pm, at The Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall in San Marino; Thursday, March 5, 8:00 pm, Zipper Hall, at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles; and Friday, March 6, 2026, 7:00 pm, at Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West.

Natural Light was commissioned for Camerata Pacifica by Sandra Svoboda in memory of her husband, Al. Bruce, the composer, describes the genesis of the work, “After hearing a performance of Duruflé’s Requiem, where Gregorian chant melodies are bathed in impressionistic harmony, I was struck by how old musical forms could resonate in new ways. This inspired me to try placing medieval materials ‘in a new light.’ I wanted to draw on the expressive power of ancient melodies to evoke a sense of spirituality that is not confined to religion. The resulting work, Natural Light, consists of five movements. Each engages with fragments of medieval music, but recontextualizes them in different ways. The odd-numbered movements lean toward the spiritual and reflective, while the even ones are more exuberant or playful.”

He adds, “A solo clarinet acts as the thread running through the piece—capable of both wild exuberance in the energetic even-numbered movements and the hushed delicacy and introspection of the more spiritual odd-numbered ones. Its ability to inhabit such contrasting emotional worlds gives the work a unifying voice, one that can sing, dance, or quietly illuminate, depending on the light it finds itself in.” In 2016,Camerata Pacifica artists performed Bruce’s Consolation of Rain, available to view on YouTube.

The repertoire also includes English composer Madeline Dring’s exuberant Trio for Flute, Oboe and Piano (1968) – written for her husband Roger Lord, a professional oboist who played with the London Symphony Orchestra.

In addition, Zahharenkova is featured on Thème varié, Op. 89, a set of variations for solo piano by French composer Cécile Chaminade, who, in 1913, became the first female to be awarded the Légion d'Honneur, France’s most prestigious national award of merit.

The program concludes with an arrangement by David Jolley of Antonín Dvořák‘s emotion-filled Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, for piano and wind quintet.

For tickets ($75 at The Huntington, Music Academy of the West, and Zipper Hall; $94.40, including fees, at Janet and Ray Scherr Forum) and information, visit www.cameratapacifica.org.

  • Nearly seven decades since they emerged from San Francisco's North Beach club scene to introduce the sounds of folk music into the mainstream and take the world by storm, The Kingston Trio return to their native California for their 2024 "Keep The Music Playing" national tour.

Credited for sparking the "American Folk Revival" or folk movement of the late 50s and early 60s with their commercial success (which at one point accounted for approximately 15% of Capitol records sales), and known for hits such as "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A. (The Man Who Never Returned)," and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," The Kingston Trio will appear for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday, April 9 at The Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) in Santa Barbara. Tickets start at $26 for students and range from $51 - $76 for the general public (plus fees) and are available via loberotheatre.com, by calling (805) 963-0761 or 1-888-4LOBERO (1-888-456-2376), or at the box office. Showtime is 7 P.M.

Formed in 1956 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart at the height of the group's popularity in 1961), The Kingston Trio is one of the longest-operating bands touring today. Though the group has undergone multiple personnel changes and its founding members have since passed away, the music of The Kingston Trio lives on with the passing of the torch to three new members with intrinsic ties to the original: Mike Marvin (adopted son of founding member Reynolds), Tim Gorelangton (friend of Reynolds since boyhood and one of the few to record with him), and Buddy Woodward (who toured with the Trio). All three personally remember the iconic trio's performances as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture at the top of the music charts--perhaps part of the reason its newest members sound so much like the original Trio.

Cited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and The Eagles, to comedian and banjo player Steve Martin, to contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy® nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers, The Kingston Trio occupies a unique, preeminent position in American musical history.

“I am proud to continue The Kingston Trio tradition and to share the music Nick, Dave, Bob, and John performed and getting audiences everywhere up and singing with us,” noted Mike Marvin, adding, “It’s all the more gratifying to perform this music for all the fans and to 'Keep the Music Playing."

  • JOIN US FOR A CAPTIVATING FREE LECTURE EXPLORING THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF THE ENDANGERED CALIFORNIA CONDOR AND THE ORIGINS OF THE GROUNDBREAKING CAPTIVE BREEDING PROGRAM.
Join Friends of California Condors Wild and Free for a captivating free lecture exploring the remarkable journey of the California Condor! Discover the origins of the groundbreaking captive breeding program. Learn how cutting-edge genetic research has reshaped our understanding of condor pedigrees, and get an insider’s look at the decision-making process behind where young, captive-bred condors are released into the wild. We’ll also discuss the current status of wild condor populations and the profound impact of breeding and release efforts on their survival.
Our guest speaker, Mr. Steve Kirkland, is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Field Coordinator for the California Condor Recovery Program. He will speak to the public in the Topping Room at the Ventura Public Library located at 651 E. Main St. from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
During the late 1990’s, Steve worked as a wildlife biologist releasing and monitoring condors in the newly released Southern California flock. In 2001 Steve transferred to the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office where he worked for over a decade on a variety of endangered species projects. He returned to the California Condor Recovery Program in 2012 in his current role where he works closely with the condor field and captive breeding programs, USFWS leadership, researchers, non-lead outreach specialists and other agency and NGO partners all working to help recover the California Condor.
The California condor was listed as an endangered species in 1967. In 1987 California Condors were on the verge of extinction with only 27 alive, as the last free flying condor, AC9, was taken from the wild. In 1992, the Service began reintroducing captive-bred condors to the wild to reestablish the population. Today, there are over 560 birds with over half of them flying free in the wild in various populations including California, Arizona, and Baja Mexico. The California Condor is a resident of the local area and can be found in the mountains behind Ojai, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru, and Santa Barbara.
Friends of California Condors Wild and Free is a nonprofit 501c3 all volunteer organization, that has the mission to enhance public awareness of the endangered California Condor and ensure that they are protected, healthy, and free.
Come learn about the endangered California Condor, North America’s largest bird. Learn how you can help the California Condor recovery effort. Become a volunteer! Be informed!
