Our Makerspace is equipped with nine sewing machines and a wide array of materials to fuel your creativity. Plus, our knowledgeable staff is always on hand to offer guidance, tips, and tricks to help you bring your vision to reality.

    Yarn Buddies is a welcoming crochet and knitting circle held at the Explore Ecology Makerspace! Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just beginning your fiber arts journey, our monthly club is the perfect space to bring your projects to life.

    We invite you to drop in with your most recent project and fiber arts questions every month. Our knowledgeable staff will be there to offer any tips and tricks to help bring your project to life. The Makerspace will provide crochet hooks, knitting needles, stitch counters, and yarn that participants can borrow and even leave with their ball of yarn each month.

  • Join us for an intermediate-level sewing workshop where guest artist Emily Adams will teach participants how to create a sturdy and stylish tote bag that will stand the test of time, all while being made of reclaimed fabrics and materials. Participants who have not used a sewing machine or are unsure of their capabilities are invited to join for an introductory session for 30 minutes before the workshop begins. Emily Adams will orient you with the sewing machine so you are up to speed and ready to go when the workshop teaching begins.
  • Unleash your creativity in our Junk Journaling Workshop, where reclaimed and recycled materials become art! Bring your own journal, and we’ll provide a treasure trove of upcycled papers, fabric scraps, vintage ephemera, and more. This open-style workshop lets you craft freely, explore new techniques, and connect with fellow journal enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned journaler or just starting, this is your time to create, relax, and repurpose with purpose.

  • Have you ever wondered how avocados made their way to America? Rob Crisell, author of California Avocados: A Delicious History, will explore key events in the rise of California’s avocado industry including how avocados became popular in California. As part of the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s Talk & Talkback Speaker Series, Crisell will discuss how avocados won the “war on fat” in food, why Haas avocados are so popular, and the most important avocado recipes in history.

    The 2025 Talk & Talkback Speaker Series is hosted by the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History. Avocado Land: The History of California’s Avocado Industry will be held on Friday, Aug. 8 from 5 p. m. to 6 p.m. at the museum, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria. The talk is free for members of the museum and $10 per person for visitors.

    "Rob Crisell is an avocado historian and enthusiast," said Jayme Yahr, the museum's director.   • Celebrate with August Crafternoons: Fiesta Finds! ¡Reuso Creativo! Join us every Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the EE Makerspace above Art From Scrap.

    This month, we’re honoring Santa Barbara’s Fiesta with eco-friendly crafts that bring the fiesta's spirit to life! Perfect for kids ages 5 and up, these projects use reclaimed materials in colorful and creative ways.

    Fiesta Finds Projects include:
    Maracas – Shake up the celebration with festive maracas made from repurposed containers, beads, and bright decorations.
    Cardboard Castanets – Create your own rhythmic castanets using recycled cardboard and bottle caps for that authentic fiesta sound!
    Ojo de Dios – Weave vibrant yarn patterns onto sticks for a meaningful, traditional craft.
    There’s something for everyone at Crafternoons. Come craft, create, and celebrate culture and sustainability with us!

    Cost: $8.00 per person. Crafternoons are for kids ages 5 and up.
    Please note our workshop is upstairs and uses hot glue guns. Adults must remain in the EE Makerspace with their child.

  • Dive into printmaking with our hands-on workshop designed for artists of all levels. Learn the technique of linocut printmaking on soft, easy-to-cut rubber blocks and create a stamp that will be reused again and again to make unique handmade stationery, cards, and art for your home. This workshop will provide you with all of the materials and tools necessary to create stamps and printed stationery from start to finish.
  • The once-a-year annual Mary Jane McCord Planned Parenthood Book Sale is returning to the Earl Warren Showgrounds from September 11-21, 2025, hosting 200,000 gently used books as well as puzzles, games, vinyl records, CDs, and DVD’s at exceptionally reasonable prices.

    Admission is FREE for the week except for Opening Night. Opening Night takes place September 11th and gives eager attendees first pick for a $30 ticket.

    The inventory is replenished every day, and the already low prices are reduced by 50% on the final day. Funds raised support PPCCC’s six health centers across the Central Coast.
