Celebrating Black History Month, Black Lives Matter, Diversity and Critical Race Theory, Santa Monica Playhouse is proud to present film, television and stage personality Stogie Kenyatta’s acclaimed NAACP Award-Winning solo show about African-American artist-activist Paul Robeson. Robeson – internationally renowned actor, recording artist, concert singer, football player, All-American athlete and Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate at Rutgers University, was witness to the artistic wonders of the Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz/Be-bop era, the horrors of the slave trade, the shame of the Holocaust, McCarthyism, blacklists, racism and oppression.

“I want people to recognize that the ocean isn’t just a victim of climate change – it is our solution. If our oceans die – and they are dying – we will die with them. Life on Earth is not possible without a living ocean.” – Cristina Mittermeier

National Geographic photographer Cristina Mittermeier has dedicated her life to safeguarding the world’s oceans and inspiring millions to do the same. With a degree in biochemical engineering in marine sciences and training in fine art photography, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers to drive conservation efforts through storytelling. She co-founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit that works at the intersection of art, science and conservation to rewild the ocean for the benefit of biodiversity, humanity and climate stability. Born in Mexico, Mittermeier spends half the year living in Canada and the other half at sea aboard her research catamaran SeaLegacy I. Join Mittermeier as she shares images and stories from her travels and explores how inextricably linked we are to that most sacred element – water.

This is a free community workshop event that will cover estate planning and how to protect family. We will have an attorney who will be presenting as well as answering questions.

Residents who earn less than $67,000 can get their taxes filed for free through Cal Poly's Volunteer Income Tax assistance program.

Show the beach some love! Join us for a cleanup on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at beautiful Arroyo Burro Beach. Meet in front of the Watershed Resource Center (blue building) to sign in.

You are welcome to bring your own clean up supplies or use ours. We’ll have buckets, plastic bags, and reusable or disposable gloves. Cleanups will be self-guided and can include the beach, the parking lot, or the open spaces surrounding Arroyo Burro.

Be sure to visit the Watershed Resource Center during cleanup hours to see interactive displays about local watersheds from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Participants will receive a coupon for a free cup of chowder from the Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.

The relationship between politics and American cinema is long and complex, but at its core rests the fundamental idea that stories matter. Film can both reveal, and popularize, political perspectives and trends. From early efforts at film censorship to contemporary conversations about Barbie and Oppenheimer, film in the United states has always been a space in which political ideas are contested. The focus of this lecture will specifically be on one of those contested ideas - fascism. From early films such as Birth of a Nation and Gabriel Over the White House, to contemporary films such as Batman and Pinocchio, the treatment of fascism in film can tell us much about where we've come from, and where we might be going.

Aaron Heresco, Ph.D., is a 1st generation college student who grew up in central Pennsylvania. He went to Penn State Altoona for his undergraduate degree with plans to work in international affairs. After taking two years off after graduation, Aaron decided to pursue a post-graduate degree in communication, focusing largely on news cultures and practices. While studying news Aaron developed a passion for understanding the relationship between communication, media, and power. These interests have led Aaron to research issues ranging from campaign finance coverage, television representation of masculinity, financial literacy programs, and the economics of television production. Aaron currently lives in Camarillo with his wife Leslie and pet.

Join us for a free art making workshop at the Library in conjunction with UCSB Reads 2024 and the Art, Design, and Architecture (AD&A) Museum's new exhibition "A Box of One's Own: Women Beyond Borders."

Workshop will be led by MFA graduate student Negar Farajiani. Farajiani’s social practice projects address global environmental and social issues.

Exhibition Tour: Prior to the workshop, Leticia Cobra Lima, PhD Candidate in the Dept. of Art & Architecture, will lead a tour of the AD&A exhibition.

SLO Friends of the Library returns to the Vets Hall for the 45th Anniversary of our large book sale event from February 29 to March 3. FOL Members will have early access to the sale on February 29 from 3 - 9 pm, followed by public sales on March 1 - 3 from 9 am to 6 pm daily. FOL memberships may be purchased in advance at slofol.org or beginning at 2:30 at the Vets Hall on February 29. 40,000 books, CDs, and DVDs for children, teens, and adults will be on sale across numerous categories. Most books will be priced at $1.50 per inch; CDs and DVDs at $.50 each. On Sunday, March 3, prices will be reduced further to $5/bag or $10/box from 1 to 6 PM. There will also be a specialty sale area for higher-value books. Come out and support the SLO Library!
