  • New Exhibit: California Missions by Edwin Deakin
    October 5, 2023 – February 18, 2024

The California mission system left behind an architectural legacy, which artist Edwin Deakin began to document in the 1890s. By that time, several of the missions were in a state of disrepair and decay and there was growing alarm that California would lose these architectural monuments of its past. Deakin captured the missions in two sets of oils and one in watercolor, often traveling by wagon to make surveys on site. The result is an unparalleled artistic record and Deakin’s outstanding achievement.

In partnership with the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library we present his twenty-one oils from their collection alongside the watercolors from ours, for the first time. Both collections have been carefully preserved for future generations.

  • Grab a glass and join us for this presentation in your living room by author Charles Healey about his book illustrating Santa Rosa Island.

At 84 square miles, Santa Rosa Island is the second largest of the eight Channel Islands. Established as a safe location to raise cattle away from the mainland, over 150 years of ranching led to a unique balance between 7,000 head of cattle, ranchers, horses, and transport ships, as well as a small military base during World War II.

Healey, a direct descendant of the island's last ranching family, presents a visual historical account of the island's cattle ranching era through his family's private photograph collections. Channel Island foxes, elephant seals, and sea anemones are interspersed with ranch houses, cowboys, and empty beaches, all combined in this unique look at a piece of our region’s history.

  • This installation consists of ninety-six panels, of varying sizes any number of which can be assembled and reassembled in a multitude of ways. Initially, the individual panels were inspired by the rich visual imagery in Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium. This grew to include images from found sources like newspapers, encyclopedias or the Internet. The wood panels are drawn, painted and screen-printed. The panels exist as discrete entities that build sequentially to create meaning in the way words in a sentence or pages in a book create a narrative. But if the panels were pages of a book, they would be unbound and could be rearranged or discarded. Within this work is the potential to physically choose and arrange panels in a way that creates meaning for the viewer that is independent of the artist’s intentions. Someone arranging the panels can use all of them or just a few, leaving the remainder on shelves installed in the corner of the gallery.
